2020.10.30 07:01 Matt0689 SGA Update

Hey y'all,
For those of you who don't know who I am, my name is Dick Beekman. I am currently serving as the Pro Tempore of the Student Senate within the Student Government Association (fancy title for number two Senator). Before I begin, I want to give the disclaimer that I am speaking solely on my behalf, and that the views and opinions you are about to see do not necessarily reflect that of Student Government as a whole or UNC Charlotte.
By now, most of y'all are aware that UNC Charlotte is implementing a modified version of Pass/No Credit for this semester. I wanted to go over a bit about the policy, preemptively answer some questions I think you might have, and explain a bit about what went into this from an advocacy perspective and why it looks different from the Spring and what some of y'all may have hoped for.
This semester, students will be afforded the opportunity to take Pass/No Credit on up to two, non-sequenced courses in a major. "Hey Dick what's a sequenced course?" Great question. A sequenced course is a series of courses that build on top of each other. My go to example is Calc I, Calc II, Calc III. You need to have a basic understanding of one course to move onto the next, as opposed to say history classes (shameless plug I'm a history major) where your understanding of European history isn't necessarily crucial for your understanding of American history. "Why only two classes?" There were concerns raised that while this semester has certainly been hectic, it isn't to the extreme of the spring, and that students are likely struggling more so with one or two classes with difficult professors. There were also concerns that students may completely throw in the towel and call it a day if they could take a pass on all their current classes. While I like to believe this wouldn't be the case, being completely honest, I know myself and many other students were guilty of that to some extent in the Spring, so while the view is pessimist, if I'm being completely honest I understand the sentiment. "But Dick I NEED to pass more than 2 classes because of legitimate reasons!" I hear you. Those concerns were raised that a cookie cutter approach won't necessarily work for all students for a variety of reasons. Students who feel they need more than the 2 classes are encouraged to submit an academic petition. This will allow for those of us who have a legitimate need for more classes to be passed to be given an exception to the rule. "I'm a 4.0 student and I need a C or higher to progress in my sequenced course. Does this mean I have to take my C and wreck my GPA just to move on? That doesn't seem fair." You're absolutely right. It isn't fair. For that reason, you will still be allowed to take a pass in your sequenced course. Having said that, you will initially be ineligible to sign up for the next course in the sequence. Academic Petition. It provides a black and white way for a University employee to see that you if you earned the required grade, that you do in fact know the material well enough to move on, but that you just took a pass to preserve your GPA. The hold will be removed from your account and you'll be allowed to progress on. I cannot stress this enough though, this will only happen if you received the original grade needed to move on. So if it takes a B, and you got a C and took a pass, you still will not be allowed to move on. Please, please, PLEASE talk to your advisor before making a decision. "I don't want to be forced to take a Pass. It will hurt my grad school options." Great news! This isn't mandatory. It's optional for all students. So if you feel this isn't what's best for your needs, no sweat. But if you feel it is, go for it!
I know this is a lot of information, but I hope you've found this helpful. On a personal note, I ran this fall on a promise of getting this in some way, shape, or form, so it's incredibly satisfying to know I was able to follow through on that promise with something that will help literally thousands of students. But I want to be clear, this wasn't just me. Numerous members of Student Government have been working tirelessly behind the scenes advocating for this. A huge shout out goes out to the Faculty Council for showing compassion and making this happen. They would have been well within their rights to say "nah fam" but they didn't. They care about us. I understand that for some of y'all, you'll feel this still isn't enough. I understand that not everyone will be on board with this, and that's understandable. That's life. I would simply ask you to consider that the alternative was nothing at all, and that this was pushed hard by members of Student Government with Monday's withdrawal deadline in mind. We've heard your voices, we've worked on your behalf, and while I cannot speak for my entire branch or organization in an official capacity, I hope you're able to see that we truly do care for all of y'all. After all, we are y'all. Thank you for putting up with an absolute essay of a post, I hope it hasn't put you to sleep, and if there is ever anything I can do for y'all please don't hesitate to let me know. If I missed any questions, feel free to leave them below but please do be aware I have a busy day tomorrow so I may be slow to respond. I have more SGA information to share with y'all, and I think y'all will love that information just as much as this (okay maybe not AS much as this), but I'll save that for a later essay post. Thank you all for the privilege of working for you, for serving as your voice. Every day it is truly the privilege and honor of a lifetime.

2020.10.30 04:03 cubadox Should I take Physics II Next Semester or wait until I'm in College?

I don't know whether I should take Physics 2 next semester or wait until next year.
Here's a little about my academic background. I'm a senior in High School doing dual enrollment at a local college. I will have my associate of arts when I graduate high school, which is nice but isn't too relevent because I plan on majoring in physics. I took Calc 1 my Sophomore year, and calc 2 my junior year. I'm taking Physics 1 with Calc this semester. To finish my AA, I have to take two classes next semester that aren't science or math related, meaning I can't take both physics 2 and calc 3 next semester (even if I really wanted to).
I am contemplating not taking physics 2 next semester for a couple reasons, but it all boils down to me taking a break. My mom and a teacher think it would be nice for me to take an academic break and only take the two (very easy) courses I need to complete my degree. They say I deserve a break because of my current accomplishments and that I'll be working hard my entire life.
Now, I think it would be super dope to take a break. I could focus on my hobbies and have fun with friends. Even with the allure of fun times, I still don't think it would be wise for me to not utilize my current opportunities. Getting the introductory physics courses out of the would mean more time for other things. The long-term reward of accomplishing more sooner seems better to me than having a fun last semester of my childhood. I could be wrong, that's essentially what I'm asking.
Here's the big caveat: it might not bring me that far forward if I take this class next semester. Because I won't have Calc 3 under my belt, I'll still have to wait at least a semester before taking Modern Physics. The school I'm most likely going to (UVA) doesn't offer Modern Physics second semester (as of right now), meaning I would still have to wait an entire year before taking Modern Physics and entering my second year of majoring in physics.
I still really want to get ahead, and I love studying physics. I don't really want to take Physics 2 online though, which is another consideration. I know this a lot of info, thank you for reading.
Any advice?
TLDR: I'm an advanced HS student who is contemplating taking Physics 2 with calc or having a relaxing rest of my time at home.

2020.10.30 00:03 Vegetable-Zucchini-9 I’m a third year USC pre-med student and I’m almost done with my undergraduate pre-med requirements. If you’re an incoming USC student on the fence for pre-med, I'm here to answer any question I can about the track. AMA

Hi, I'm Kane! I'm posting this AMA to provide information for incoming students who are considering whether or not pre-med at USC is the right choice. If, at any time in the post, you disagree with my opinion, that's OK! This is here as an added resource for your decision, and in the end, the decision is completely yours. Basically, I'm only here to help :)
Pre-med requirements I've completed so far: Chem 105a/b, Bisc (Biology) 120/220, Ochem 322a/b (yes, I can answer questions about Ochem!), Calc 125, and Physics 135a. I still have Physics 135b and Biochem 312 left to finish. I've also done hospital volunteering through the COPE program and I've been involved in a psychology research lab since last year.
Pre-med isn't a major: pre-med is confusing! I'll try to break it down a little bit here. Pre-med is not actually a major, it's a pre-professional track. This means that along with the pre-med required courses, you will also need to complete your major required courses to graduate. For example, I am a Global Health major and pre-med, so I have to complete all my Global Health classes to graduate, as well as pre-med STEM courses to be accepted into medical school. Along with classes, you will need research, doctor-shadowing, volunteering, and letters of rec from your professors.
Pre-med stats: here are a few stats about pre-med you may not know. Please feel free to refer to these when asking questions!
Interviews: I wanted to include different perspectives of USC pre-med students rather than just my own. I conducted 4 interviews with current USC students. Each of these students entered USC as pre-med and two of them (Elliot and Sweta) have stayed pre-med, while the other two (Melissa and Maya) have switched tracks. I HIGHLY encourage listening to the full interviews because they all have relevant and super informative experiences with USC pre-med. They cover questions regarding positive/negative experiences in pre-med, social life (if it's even possible for pre-meds), and study habits/study advice. If you choose not to watch the full interviews (again, I really think you should watch them!!), I included selected quotes from one of the questions below.
In this question, I asked for advice for future students. I included each speaker's answer, and I also added a topic apart from that question that was unique to each speaker, which gave a really good insight into USC pre-med.
Elliot
Sweta
Melissa
Maya
OK! I know that was a bunch of information I just threw at you, but I hope you were able to read through most of it. I think it's all super important and hopefully it will help in the pre-med decision-making process. If you have any questions at all, about the content above or about USC pre-med, I am here to answer! Good luck with the decision and Fight On!
AMA!!

2020.10.29 23:29 MakinBaconPancakezz Will be taking economics, but I’ve never taken calculus. Not sure how to prepare?

So, I love economics. But I’m only okay in math.
I’ve taken statistics and I did fine. I’ve taken Micro and Macro and those were fine too.
Problem is, I still have to take more classes, which I know will involve hire level calc and statistics, and I can’t remember shit from my stats class. Nor have I taken calculus before.
I look at what’s going to be in the classes and it’s like I’m reading a foreign language.
How to prepare for this so I’m not toast lose in class?

2020.10.29 20:02 OtherwiseNinja Mega-Absol adds the Fairy-type

I doubt I'm the first person to come up with this, but I think would be really cool for Mega-Absol to get the Fairy-type. It already has those giant wings, and I think it thematically works with it being a lonesome, rarely seen, misunderstood Pokemon that appears to warn people of natural disaster.
In terms of sets, I don't think it would change the standard Mega-Absol sets much. You run Knock Off/Pursuit, Play Rough, whatever coverage you want and/or Swords Dance.
STAB Play Rough could be huge for M-Absol, allowing it to take care of fighting types that used to threaten it, as well as hitting other dark types without expending Superpower.
On the NatDex tier list, it gains a typing-matchup against the likes of- Garchomp, Greninja, a double-STAB immunity against Latios/Latias, Hydreigon, M-Medicham and Weavile.
On the other hand, it also starts to lose to ever-present mons as well, like Toxapex, Corviknight, Ferrothorn, Magearna, M-Scizor, Kartana and Magnezone. Those steel types will probably force M-Absol to perpetually run Fire Blast or Superpower, and you absolutely have to run Zen Headbutt if you don't want to be walled to oblivion by Toxapex.
So those are my thoughts on this concept. I don't have the time to run calcs right now, but what are your thoughts on what we have right now? M-Absol currently doesn't even crack C-tier on the NatDex rankings. Will adding the Fairy type allow Absol to break this barrier? Will it manage to get as high as B or maybe even A tier? I personally doubt it, because I think their are simply too many Mons better at doing what it would do best. But it's fun to think about.
I think it's such a cool Mon, and I would love for it to have some competitive viability.

2020.10.29 16:52 goofstaffshin Transfer advice (w more detail i promise!!!)

Hello, i realized i got baked last night and just wrote a really vague post about transferring so here goes Round 2.
Im a sophomore right now at a T20/T50 ish institution (depending on what your field is/personal biases), but i was originally interested in econ/political science, and the schools in DC (take a guess) so I was like “oh lit and they gave me money”
Now that Im here, im so unhappy w my college life generally (many reasons stem from my own ignorance about the school/environment) Here are some of my reasons
A) hyper competitive/culture is obsessed w work/salary/social ascension as opposed to being more intellectual/hippy (this is on me, i had a choice between UC Berkeley and Gtown and chose the latter due to money). This isnt to say there arent really bright kids/ppl interested in more debate vs workshopping/networking etc, but that the culture is dominated with ppl inclined towards the latter (moving to another school will probably not help too much with this tbh)
B) i realized that although im interested in Poli Sci, im more compelled to studying econ from a more mathematical perspective (which georgetown does NOT offer vs schools like columbia/brown, who have econ-math majors and their econ majors have harder prerequisites). GTown you JUST need calc I to finish the econ major for example vs linear or multi... +econ majors tend to be softened finance/WS wannabees interested in finance. Moving to another school would give me freedom in picking a econ-math major while still being able to take classes in government/social sciences
C) finding research assistant positions, also very hard and tend to be reserved for grad students in the poli sci/econ departments (trust me i have asked around plenty, asking my profs etc). Moving to diff school would help me in this regard 100%
D) really tough social life. Honestly its also me, but i have basically zero friends/connections at my current school, and i hate it. Moving might help me but also maybe not (this is more a personal prob not one indicative of my school).
E) BS core classes that just cut into my ability to choose when i already know i would take plenty of classes in Theology/philosophy/history/sociology/ w the free credits i have left in courses that interest me (brown for example would help me out SO much cux i could take classes im excited about)
I feel transferring would A) give me more intellectual fulfillment B) more fit my academic interests C) give me opportunity to pursue what i want D) chance in social culture/environment may be a good thing (this is more of a BS reason i know and not a good reason to transfer)
MY BIG WORRIES: 1) FINANCIAL AID: im getting a lot right now, and maybe transferring is useless for me if a) i get accepted and get no aid or b) i wont even get accepted in the first place cuz my application is ass 2) CREDITS: if i apply i WILL have more than 60 credits by the time i apply. Will this detrimentally affect me, is transferring basically a lose cause for this purpose?
Right now im basically mulling over whether i should even BEGIN the transfer process, and would love some advice (good, bad, and and all welcome!!)
Obligatory stats: 3.91 undergrad GPA so far 35 ACT
Yall trashed me for my trash post last night, please trash me for this post today!!! (Seriously though give me some brutally honest advice, give this arrogant boy a reality check)

2020.10.29 02:55 Sperabo Recent Economics graduate looking to become an Electrical Engineer; is it too risky of a change at 26 and given the whole COVID situation?

Hey guys,
So yes I know about Electrical Engineering and what it all entails (my dad did Electrical Engineering). My story is that I was always a terrible student, so I meandered into an Economics degree...and then I discovered a huge love for Mathematics at the tail-end of my degree (like last year), so I thought that I'd just finish it and then see what happens...
Well, unemployment happened lol. Anyway, I've been unemployed for 4 months now and I have no clue what I wanna do with that degree besides some basic data analysis jobs that really don't make me enthusiastic at all. My dream is really to do maths and so I thought of Engineering since the theory behind the field is also interesting to me; the other option is to go into Stats but one school I contacted told me that I'd need to go back to school for a math major, so it seems that I'd have to go back anyway.
I just want to know if it's a smart decision right now given my age and COVID (online classes; how labs are going to go, etc.) and whether I should hold on until things kinda die down a bit on the instability department. I also know that I will have to take some pre-recs such as physics and chemistry but I'D wager that's gonna take me one or two semesters since I took math classes up until Multivariable Calc 2 and Analysis. I'm in Canada btw and I was thinking of applying to Polytechnique.
Thanks!

2020.10.29 01:42 munexico Are all of the childhood things I thought were normal as a kid really signs of ASD?

I [F18] have only just recently started to wonder if I may be on the spectrum. I always figured it was social awkwardness but my mom recently described my small talk as “painful” and that talking with me about something relatively mundane can be like “pulling teeth.” I’m looking back at my childhood for some more perspective and I’m getting kind of freaked out by how many things I thought were “normal” but really might be signs of ASD. I didn’t have a speech delay or anything obvious (although I don’t think I babbled very much, but my mom doesn’t remember).
As a kid, I really wanted to have a conversation like in Disney shows. I saw how quickly and naturally conversation flowed and whenever I would speak to people, I would be assessing the conversation subconsciously to see if what I was doing was matching up with what I saw. I wanted to be quippy and fun. I would take phrases and interactions and log them in order to whip them out accordingly. However, the pressure of a conversation flowing rests upon two people and I found myself frequently disappointed not getting the response the characters in TV shows would get. This has continued to today and when I talk to people in a natural way, I can’t stop thinking about how good it is that I’m interfacing well (effectively ruining the moment entirely).
In a similar vein, my brother and I had a pretty bad relationship. I remember specifically writing him a letter as a plea to make our relationship better. I wrote about how I wanted us to be like the brothers and sisters in television shows. To be honest, I wasn’t really focused on the relationship itself, but the idea of presenting as a normal quippy younger sister felt good to me. That’s really weird when I write it out haha.
I also remember trying to be sarcastic. I don’t have a specific memory but I get the sense that I would misuse a sarcastic tone a lot. That—or I would say something and expect people to understand I was being sarcastic, yet I wouldn’t change my tone or inflection at all.
I had a hard time playing pretend as a kid as well. I had a best friend who loved pretending, even on phone calls. I was pretty confused at times and had a hard time believing that she really believed all of the stuff she was saying. I felt pretty weird, but went along with it because I always wanted to be a little sidekick or something.
In kindergarten, playing house was always a spectator sport for me. I don’t remember if I joined in more than once—but the one time I did join in, I was the dog. I thought being a dog would be pretty easy, considering I wouldn’t have to talk and people could just tell me what to do.
I pretended to be a dog, cat, or other animal a lot of the time, it felt almost more natural.
I was kind of dysfunctional at times, I definitely had a bit of a biting problem. I didn’t bite that many people but it was still enough to be yelled at a couple times. (This was before kindergarten, so it was rare I was around other kids). I eventually started biting myself when frustrated or bored. Whenever I would get frustrated playing a game on my DS I would bite the corner (this one might be normal but I think it’s kinda funny).
I was a huge tattletale. Ratting on people not because I wanted to get them in trouble in a spiteful way, but because I wanted things to be in order.
I was a hoarder kid, kind of a pack rat but I have a hard time remembering playing with toys. I had a Barbie doll that I took a lot of places, but it was only because it was squishy in the middle and I like messing with it. (Maybe a stimming thing?)
I was also a really existential kid, realizing that after I died there was no heaven or hell. I thought about myself and my family dying. It definitely made me sad but I would describe it more as melancholic. To be honest I didn’t believe in a lot of things, never believed in Santa or the Easter bunny or God. I tried to be religious but it felt really performative (unfortunately I find a lot of the things I try to do as being performative).
I had normal-ish special interests. TV shows and books. I also had some odd ones. I think I saw a picture of the pyramids as a kid, probably as the family computer’s desktop background. From then on I’ve had a deep fascination with ancient Egypt and archaeology and the study of ancient people. I had a Nikola Tesla phase, a U.S. presidents phase (during which I memorized the placement of the presidents and their respective parties. I even pasted pictures of presidents and various presidential pets to a composition book to write presidential facts in. The book never got filled as this was very short lived), a “draw all of the Pokémon” phase, a creature designing phase, a fashion designer phase. I could expand ad nauseam but I think you get the gist. I’ve always been obsessed with facts and would often get gifted those huge books of questions and science or history facts. I’ve recently delved head first into philosophy, spending an almost sickening amount of money on books. I’m only hoping this one won’t be as short lived as the others.
I don’t often feel like boring people with these interests so I end up talking to myself about them. Having quasi debates with fake people about my interests. As if I were on a talk show or a podcast. That sounds weird, right? I’ve always done this. I kind of perform to an invisible audience even when I’m alone sometimes.
I went through goth phases, girly phases, and a tomboy phase abnormally young (like, 9 years old). Maybe I’ve had identity problems my whole life. A lot of my time was spent trying to be a person kind of.
I’m normally quiet and reserved, but I’ve had friendships that really bring some other side of me out. I turn into someone loud and unencumbered by shame. I would do things that are kind of annoying looking back on it, but I just wanted to make my closest friends laugh. I reveled in the absurd as a kid. Finding taboos to break and being weird as a way to be funny.
Normally, I understand idioms and phrases. I wouldn’t say they puzzle me in any real way, and sarcasm is not lost upon me. Most of the time, I get when people are joking. One time in particular though, an acquaintance (that sounds awfully formal, but I wouldn’t call us close) said “What’s good?” when joining me at study hall. I defaulted to “. . .Nothing,” which is how I’d normally respond to someone asking me what’s up. She kind of laughed and asked, “Nothing’s good?” I felt really embarrassed, to be honest I’m still not sure how to respond to this one.
I’ve always been good at English, and love dissecting passages and identifying literary devices and themes. I get symbolism well and am good at drawing connections. I’m naturally gifted with a great memory so history and most sciences were easy. Physics and pre-calc had me floundering a bit (I sat next to people who talked a lot, though. That could be why.)
I’m not great at math. I find basic math kind of hard, it’s like something doesn’t click, it’s mostly memorization, but some easy ones trip me up (Like 7+4 is one that I have to think about for a little too long). I’m great at trig or algebra though. When given exact equations and specific situations to use them in it’s easy and fun. Word questions confuse me and on the SAT I felt like I was guessing, despite getting a pretty good math score. My English score was much better—670 or maybe a bit higher.
I’m good at empathizing with music and poetry, bending meanings or symbolism to fit my emotions. I don’t know if this is common among autistic people? I’ve always heard that autistic people have trouble with nuance or imagery, but those are things that I excel at. (Maybe not always conversationally but it’s very easy in written text.)
I put a concerted effort into how I’m sitting as well. Constantly assessing what emotion or vibe I’m giving off. When I would sit alone in study hall, I wanted to convey a sense of casualness or something. I didn’t want people to think I was uncomfortable sitting alone and come up to sit with me or talk to me. I would look at how other people were sitting and tried to mirror them. Or I would remember a way a friend sat when she was being casual.
I want to be told exactly what to do. (Sometimes, though, I hate when people over explain things like I’m dumb or don’t get it). I read instructions over and over. I double-triple-quadruple check schedules to make sure I’m reading them right. I was the only one (I think) that didn’t go to my graduation because of the weird situation that is COVID-19 and the parameters were so uncertain. I didn’t even get a cap and gown because I didn’t know who to talk to and I felt embarrassed. My college app didn’t get in on time because of how confusing it all felt. My parents didn’t go to college either so I was pretty stranded. I would never have gone to prom (even though my senior prom got cancelled) because first—I didn’t see the point, and second—It seems like a very complex social event with steps and weird guidelines.
I love standardized testing. The AP tests I took were fun to me. Being told where to put stickers and how to seal booklets and being given a time parameter were all very pleasing.
I have this feeling that everyone else got a handbook that I didn’t get. I feel delayed almost. Or like and outsider. I can’t tell if I feel like an outsider because of some weird depersonalization thing or because I may be autistic.
Could this have been caused by a lack of socialization? I never want to daycare or preschool. Maybe that’s why I am this way? I played with very few other kids my age before starting kindergarten. Considering those are incredibly formative years, is that a possible root cause? I’m really curious if this is the case.
I’ve asked my mom, but she finds some of this quite normal. Considering autism is heritable she may also be on the spectrum. I’d love an outside opinion!! If you have any questions I would gladly answer them!

2020.10.29 01:39 djkiwibaby Switching Majors

TL;DR I'm currently a second yr. biology major and I'm considering switching majors.
Ok well... I love biology and anatomy, and science itself. But I'm failing my last gen chem class because I took the other first two gen chem classes online over the summer and I did NOT learn anything. I didn't take AP chem in HS, I took regular chem sophmore yr hs so I really don't know ANYTHING about chemistry. I struggle HARD with math, I'm currently in calculus and like I said before I really have no idea what's going on. After this class I have one more calc class then I'll never have to take another one again but I will have to take physics LMAO.
Although I'm almost done with these gen ed science classes, I still have to do OCHEM and Physics... before I get to the upper div classes. I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it through them and pass with good enough grades/ pass at all.
SO you're probably thinking dam this person rlly is not good at anything... its true I say the same, but I am taking a gen bio class rn and I love it, I'm getting good grades and I'm excited to learn more from that class. The only reason I chose to be biology major is because I do love learning about biology and human anatomy and I want to help people, like really help them and see that I'm making a difference in their lives. I know that if I do ever get to the Biology upper div classes, I'll pass with flying colors and actually be happy with what I'm doing. But I won't get the chance to make it if I don't pass the other science gen ed classes and I'm not sure it going through all that pain and struggle/ downgrade of my GPA is worth it.
I think if I did switch my major I'd want to be a business admin major with a concentration in marketing. My college doesn't have a marketing major so this will have to do. I really like marketing and I'd love to learn more about it and even pursue it as a career. I would want to use this to work with something in the media and/or film. My actual dream job is to be an actor (which I know is really hard and super competitive but).
I'm still considering to stay as biology major because I don't want to give up too early and think I could've pass those classes if I tried a little harder. But I don't want to waste my time on something that won't end up benefitting my future and will just give me more anxiety.
I'm still unsure if I want to become a doctor in the future but I think I would enjoy it as a career, but I'd have to stick to my studies and get through med school and more. I'd be completely fine with a business corporate job too.
What would you do if you were me?

2020.10.29 01:21 xloversarcana Should I prioritize biology or calculus for next quarter?

Hello! I’m in my second year of dual enrollment at a community college, and I’ve been debating with my friend about which schedule would be best for premed. I’ve taken one quarter of chemistry, and I’m planning on taking biology at the same time next quarter (I had to take a quarter of chemistry as a prerequisite for biology). Since I’m starting the sequence a quarter late, I have to take my third quarter of biology during the summer. My friend told me that I should take calculus I and II instead of biology because it’s a requirement at most medical schools and I wouldn’t have to take a summer class. I’m not so sure about the math requirement though, and I don’t want to take more math than I have to.
I’m also afraid that taking biology and chemistry at a community college would make me less competitive. However, the university I plan on going to curves premed courses to a 2.7, and my older sister advised me to take as many classes at CC as I can. Alternatively, I could take chem II, biology I, and calc I next quarter, but that sounds like a recipe for disaster to me :/ Should I just take calculus now and biology at university? I’d love to hear other people’s opinions about this, thank you for your time!

2020.10.28 20:46 minecraftpiggo I can’t put into words why I love stugo

Like I know I love it when I do volunteering for lunch for it even mundane tasks feel exciting and fulfilling. I do things even when I have enough points for the quota that month. I got angry during my sports season because it was keeping me from going to events for stugo. I cried once because I was helping with a spreadsheet during lunch but we waited 10 minutes and the people from the next lunch didn’t come and then we just left it and the labtop went missing and I was so scared I would be kicked out for helping lose a labtop. I literally asked my calc teacher to let me leave class (he probably agreed bc I was literally crying lmao) and interrupted an administrative meeting because I was trying to figure out where the labtop went because the idea of being kicked out upset me so much. I clearly love stugo and I know I do but I don’t know why? I don’t even feel super passionate about the community impacts of stugo but I love stugo itself. Why? How would I go about writing about it for an activities essay? I can’t put into words why I like it so much

2020.10.28 20:32 highfalutinjargon Questions about What Trade Program to Enter

Hello,
I'm a Grade 12 Student here from Canada, and am wondering if anyone here can give me insight on two trade programs that I've been considering. The first one is being an Auto Technician, reason is because I love working on cars, and find it to be really relaxing for me. The other program I've been considering is welding, which although I have no experience with, I still thought that it was a useful thing to learn if I were to become an Auto Technician, and from my understanding as well, a lot people make decent money being a welder as well so there is that.
So the question is, should I stick with my passion or should I try my luck by diving into a field that I don't know much about?
Im not expecting to be rich off the get go, but id like to be able to support myself with minimal help from others preferably as soon as possible. I also love to travel and go to places around the world, so if there's a better place to do either of those jobs than in Canada feel free to mention it.
Ive been talking to some mechanics friends from both higher end exotics and lower end cars, and most of them say that the pay is ok. Some of them say that its not worth it at all, and that you'll be living a rough life for a long time until you get enough experience and credentials. Is this true?
For courses, I've taken all the Levels for Pre-Calc, Biology, and Chemistry, and I'm finishing the Grade 12 courses for English, Physics and Phys-Ed. Is there any courses that I need for either of these jobs?
Any experiences/information/questions are appreciated
Also the reason I want to be able to support myself ASAP is because my parents don't want me to go to a trade school because they think I won't be able to make a living from it, so they won't support me unless I go to a good university and study something that they deem to be acceptable. I don't have the marks to comply with their requests and I guess I also want to prove them wrong about how I won't be able to support myself alone.
One again any help is appreciated,
Thanks in advance!

2020.10.28 05:31 lickintreesap Career Path Ideas

First off, thank you for taking your time to read/respond.
I am a 23 year old with primary interests in Finance/Investments, Business, Computer Science, & Writing. I have 2 years towards a computer science degree but dropped out (life & calc 3), so I have basic experience with varying coding languages. I'm quite analytical, have done very well in sales (despite being an introvert), and have always been promoted or placed in a management role despite being younger than my peers.
The general path I am on at the moment is IT, studying for the A+ to progress into security (although would love to jump into 3d modeling and coding for AVR). My dream is to have my own business, but I'd like to build a foundation in which to create that at a later point. I am a very fast learner, very calm, an effective leader and a strong team member. While I think IT -> certs -> security is a *shoulder shrug* good plan, I would like to hear opinions and maybe some recommendations on other options?
Anything is appreciated.
Interests -> Computers, Business, Money, Solving problems, helping businesses/people (not in a customer service format)
Much obliged,
Confused career seeker

2020.10.28 00:33 nsums repost bc no one saw my last one ;(

Demographics: Asian Male Bay Area in a Bay Area-esque school(yikes!
Intended Major(s): Public Health
ACT/SAT/SAT II: 35 ACT, 800 Chem, 800 Phys, 800 Math 2
UW/W GPA and Rank: 3.85, 4.25 (school is pretty severely deflated– avg gpa for Stanford at our school is literally like 3.9. I'm in the middle of accepted applicants, according to Naviance [though we do have a bunch of faculty].)
Coursework:
[AP Coursework]: AP Chem (4) , AP Lang (5), AP French (4), AP Phys C E&M, AP CSA, AP Bio, AP Macro&Econ, AP BC Calc
[DE]: Went to Stanford and took Organic Chemistry I&2. Got an A in both.
Awards(lol):
5 Scioly medals
AP Scholar
Film got accepted into an ocean health film festival
Extracurriculars:
Scioly (2 years). Basically placed at every event I've gone to.
Interned at SRI and worked on a paper on Antibiotics– unpublished unfortunately due to the restrictive nature of the company
interned at Stanford Medicine working with COVID stuff– can't say too much for fear of doing. Unlikely I'll get into a paper but they're writing my LOR.
Wrote a research paper on MeHg in my local community with a Berkeley Professor. It has not yet been published but I've sent the abstract. An abbreviated version has been published on a popular, more journalistic, conservation website. Berkeley professor says that there's a 50/50 chance we get into a top journal.
Made a film on the same topic.
Did stock trading (used to want to go finance but not anymore) and earned about 10k (300%) and donated it all to local hospitals for food and PPEs.
CoPres of Chem Club
Board of an NPO (no details, dox) – raised 20k last year for our cause
President of the Immunotechnology club at my school. We do advocacy stuff and we routinely invite guest speakers.
Co-leader of KWHS Wharton investment competition team
Spent quite a few summers in Yosemite doing survey work for the local forest rangers
Essays/LORs/Other:
LOR from AP Chem teacher: she's not the type of teacher you become friends with. lot's of tough love. had her for 2 years. our dynamic is great though and I think she'll write a great LOR come time. also, if it helps, almost 75% of the people who get into t20s at our school (which is quite a bit of people might I add!) have had letters from her. correlation != causation but just thought I might add that.
LOR from Lang: probably not too amazing..? she knows I'm extremely passionate about the writing I've done and that I'm ok at lang bc I got a 5 but the class was large and we didn't get as much time to converse as I would've liked.
I have a Stanford professor writing my letter. I know it's glowing because I've seen it. I showed it to my private counselor and she said it was really good too.
My essay writing is not great. I wrote about my passion for epidemiology and how that contrasted with my Dad's ideals. I'd say, optimistically, a 7.5/10.
Schools:
REA Stanford
the rest: JHU (ED 2 maybe), NYU, Yale, Cornell,, UPenn, WUSTL, Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Northwestern, USC, Dartmouth (eh), Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, Northeastern, SUNY stony brook

2020.10.27 20:04 iamconfusion11111 Am i doomed if im struggling with Calc?

I'm currently taking Mata32 and I'm not doing well... I think I have a 60 right now. Am i doomed in management if I'm struggling with calculus? Is management calc intensive throughout the whole program? id love some guidance from management students!
