Dear Hon. ,
It is difficult for me to write this letter as I, like many others in my position, feel we cannot be open about our situation lest we be fired from our job or accosted by the police. I personally have faced intense stigma from loved ones and the community that I was raised in. Stereotypes have been put on me and I felt like people expected me to live a certain narrative. I have been a legal medical cannabis patient for ten months now and I have experienced situations in the community that have driven me to write to a member of parliament whom I personally know is an upstanding representative of people in need of assistance.
I have been struggling with [ ] for a few years now. To treat my condition I am prescribed an array of medication. A key part of this regime is my medical cannabis which is prescribed by [ ] at [ ]. Access to this medicine in a legal setting has been amazing for managing the symptoms of my conditions, which occur every single day. Yet, Queensland is incredibly far behind when it comes to cannabis laws and there is still a large amount of archaic policies that persecute members of a community trying to legally treat their illness. I am writing to you because I think it's time that our community gains some sort of voice so that we can share our experiences and educate people on our reasons and results.
The biggest threat to the law- abiding cannabis patient is ignorance and mis-education. This country's laws on psychotropic substances were written by men and women who had been fed blatant lies about a substance that is not only a wonderful medicine, but an integral part of humanities cultural history. There are several areas in which the average cannabis patient is unfairly dispositioned compared to an able bodied constituent.
Firstly, I would like to highlight the driving laws. The only Australian medical studies that have been conducted on THC (the main psychoactive component in cannabis) used doses as high as 150mg of THC per person. One particular test by doctors Arkell and Lintzeris dosed patients with a very high dose of 125 mg of THC and asked them to conduct a four hour driving task. To put that into perspective an average cannabis patient treating mental illness and chronic pain may take as little as 5mg and as much as 75mg of THC during an entire day, combined of course with a regime of CBD (Individual cases may vary. For example a patient treating cancer pain may take upwards of 250mg of THC per day, this however is an extreme case example). The study, reported by Sydney University, stated that nearly all patients at this dosage experienced a high reluctance to drive, suggesting that in a social setting they would not be behind the wheel anyway. When put into the simulation half of the patients were recorded only weaving slightly more between lanes than the sober group. The other half of the patients actually acted safer, they maintained a greater distance from cars and travelled at a mean lower speed. Obviously someone should never drive if impaired. However, it is absolutely barbaric and criminal to imprison a driver simply because they have some amount of THC in their system. Especially when the preliminary research into the issues suggests that THC does not inhibit the individuals in the manner as would be as dangerous on the road. Not to mention that patients can test positive on saliva test days after consuming their medicine. As a patient I could stop medicating tomorrow and in a month I could still test positive on any form of THC test.
Secondly, patients can not grow their own plants for medical use. Medical cannabis is incredibly expensive. A bottle of CBD oil containing 5% full spectrum extract costs $160 for 25ml, which may last only two weeks. A bottle of dried medical cannabis flower can cost anywhere from $150 to $240 for a two week supply. Of course these prices vary from patient to patient but, I personally have to pay upwards of $500 a month for my medication. If patients were allowed to grow their own medicine then we could be saved from big pharmaceutical companies pricing sick individuals out of the market.
Thirdly, patients are required to spend extra money every time they order their medication to have it shipped to them. Very few pharmacies dispense medical cannabis and those that do determine the price that they sell it at. It is pure common sense that a dispensary model should be introduced. Currently patients are at the mercy of the pharmacies and clinics because they are not able to hold companies accountable for the product they are selling. There have been issues with mould, bugs and seeds in patients medicine and patients had to wait numerous weeks to get any answer out of their health practitioners. Cannabis can not kill anybody. Cannabis has never killed anybody from overdose. It is absurd to think that a liquor store can operate in a recreational setting, where a person can come in and make a purchase and die from consuming that product. Yet, a dispensary cannot be allowed to operate to sell medicine in a way that benefits the patient.
I am writing this letter to appeal to you on compassionate grounds. Patients in the community feel like they have no voice against a system that treats them differently to every other patient. The community just wants to feel safe and have the reassurance that they can lawfully take their medication and continue their road of recovery.
Arkell, T.R., Lintzeris, N., Kevin, R.C. et al. Cannabidiol (CBD) content in vaporized cannabis does not prevent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)-induced impairment of driving and cognition. Psychopharmacology 236, 2713–2724 (2019).

2020.11.24 00:25 globalwp [CONFLICT] Intercepting the Aircraft

m: due to the time frame between the Brazilian deployment announcement and the covert op, this was significantly delayed
The Brazilian Deployment to Algeria violates a long standing policy by the Algerian government to oppose the deployment of foreign bases into Algeria. Traumatized by the colonial era bases of France and the French Foreign legion, and the attrocities committed by the French government, the Algerian people have decided to never again accept foreigners basing in their lands... until today.
What is important to note is that Algeria is not a democratic nation. The nation claims to espouse Arab Socialism, yet it is evident that it supports neither Arab Unity nor Socialism. The nation which has historically supported the MPLA in their noble struggle against Portuguese colonialism has bowed down to neo-Portuguese colonialism and turned its back on the Arab people. The kleptocracy in power cares not for the Algerian people, their livelihoods, or their independence, but cares only for the personal enrichment of the elite at the expense of their people. A country which embezzles millions and costs hundreds of thousands of people their jobs, a government that is ripe with nepotism to the core, with a president's son that sells cocaine with impunity, and a government controlled by shadowy figures which subverts democracy and breeds poverty and ignorance.
The good people of Algeria do not deserve to have their rights trampled upon by foreign powers. They do not deserve to be treated as second class citizens in their own country. The United Arab Republic does not wish to integrate Algeria into its republic if the people are not willing, but the United Arab Republic is willing to fight for a truly free and independent Algeria. The Generals have betrayed the nation, and the people will rise. Brazil will not colonize Algeria!
Intercepting the Delivery
[Part that is happening either way]
The UAR upon hearing the deployment will deploy to prevent Brazilian troops from entering the territory following the news of the deployment. Troops along the border will prepare for an invasion if necessary. The air force will begin by establishing a no fly zone over Algeria for Brazilian Aircraft.
The UAR navy in the Western Mediterranean will prevent Brazilian ships from docking in Algeria. The main ports of Oran and Algiers will be monitored by air and sea, and will intercept and sink any Brazilian shipping entering the territory. Any Algerian aircraft deployed to intercept the UAR's forces will be shot down. The UAR's newest aircraft dates from the 1980s and is roughly comparably to the F-16. They would presumably be unable to lock onto the UAR's Delta Dart-IIs and would thus be easily grounded should they attempt to lock on. The Algerian air defense system will be spoofed by an Boeing E-3 to paint a picture of a clear sky should it be activated for whatever reason.
Moreover, the UAR's air defense network already deployed over Tunisia would be able to detect and knock out any retaliation from the Algerian air force, with the air defense system's range covering much of the populated portions of the Algerian heartland in the north.
The UAR's air defense network boasts powerful early warning radar that would presumably detect the Brazilian deployment. Integration and cooperation between Laurentian and UAR forces would presumably mean that early warning radar in West Africa and Morocco would be informed of the aircraft approaching, relaying this information to the UAR and allowing aircraft already in theater to deploy to intercept.
Elsewhere, the UAR's air defense will be placed on high alert and AEW&C aircraft will be mobilized in order to detect surprise attacks in the Maghreb. (guessing if they try attacking elsewhere for whatever reason I get to write more orders then)
m: Since I am not sure if the deployment is considered a done deal or if I can intercept it in the air, I created two sets of orders.
[If the equipment was fully delivered and bases set up for whatever reason (doesn't make sense but sometimes it do be like that)]
The airspace over Algeria will similarly be patrolled by 150 Delta Dart IIs and a small group of 2 Boeing E-3s which will launch AGM-201A Arrow packages at the S-400 and Siper Sam systems operated by Brazil at standoff range. The E-3s will spoof the early warning radar systems to present a picture of clear skies as the Delta Dart-IIs launch a combined salvo of 480 A2G missiles for SEAD purposes on the Brazilian SDAP-20 Mk2 and Siper Systems, with another 240 JASSM-XR missiles directly targeting Brazilian aircraft on the ground. The E-3 spoofing should buy enough time for the the aircraft to launch their initial payloads before Brazil is able to scramble its aircraft on the ground. F-16CJs will be utilized in tandem with the Delta Darts for EW purposes to help confuse air defenses and communications infrastructure as the Brazilians scramble to figure out what is going on.
The UAR's navy will also simultaneously launch cruise missile strikes with conventional Nuh and Tomahawk cruise missiles fired from the Western Mediterranean directly onto the bases in question. While the cruise missiles should be sufficient to eliminate Brazil's air defense systems and forces due to the Azanian precedent, in the worst case scenario they would be enough to distract the air defenses while the remaining A2G missiles decimate the bases in question.
Aïn Oussera Airport and Aguenar – Hadj Bey Akhamok Airport are legitimate targets for this operation and all Brazilian targets are to be eliminated.
[If the equipment was not set up allowing an interception]
The UAR will deploy Delta Dart IIs which are not trackable by the aging Algerian air defense systems. They will utilize their stealth features and quantum radar to identify incoming Cargo Transports over Morocco or Mali and will neutralize them before they are able to land. Firing at the cargo planes and stealth fighters at stand off range, the UAR will prevent the delivery of Brazilian systems and by extension the development of Brazilian bases. Patrols through pro-Laurentian territories may be used when possible to encircle the country and prevent engaging the Algerian air force to minimize their casualties. When it is not possible to intercept over Mali, Morocco, or the Mediterranean, the UAR will utilize the Delta Dart II's stealth features to intercept enemy aircraft within Algerian airspace without them knowing. If they intercept and pose a threat, then the pilots will have a green-light to defend themselves.
Similarly, the UAR's navy will target Brazilian shipping coming into Algeria with Brazilian ships delivering troops and equipment being sunk on sight. The larger UAR navy should dissuade the Algerian navy from interfering as it would only cause their ships to get damaged. If ships are to interfere, they too will be sunk by large missile salvos from the much larger Ticonderoga Class Cruisers and Arleigh Burke Missile Destroyers. Given that Brazil will have to cross the straits of Gibraltar if it wishes to deploy by sea, submarines camping in the area would be utilized to strike their shipping as it crosses the choke-point preventing a deployment.
The UAR's sizable deployment can deploy thousands of anti-ship missiles as well as boasts powerful anti-ballistic and anti-cruise missile capabilities that could by sheer number of missiles overcome the Brazilian navy sitting at port in Lisbon. The UAR's surveillance satellites will monitor the Lisbon port and track the Brazilian navy's movement. Should it fire munitions or maneuver within range of the UAR navy, it will be decimated by a barrage of cruise missiles and Air Launched AShMs launched by the Delta Darts. The UAR navy will remain within range of the fleet to prevent it from moving to positions where it may out-range the UAR. Nonetheless, the UAR's large amount of air launched cruise missiles, its ballistic missiles, as well as its large anti-air defense systems can be used to prevent this from occurring. Note that the UAR will not engage the navy unless it engages us, instead opting to maneuver to be in a position to threaten it should it attempt anything.
Message to the Algerian People
Utilizing the KJ-3000 for psychological operations as well as radio and media, the UAR will clarify that it does not seek to invade Algeria but seeks only to remove the Brazilian presence. It will state that the UAR believes only in democratic principles and does not seek to invade a neighboring Arab country or cause its people harm.
The message will stress that the UAR does not support the current regime's stance on Brazil, and that Brazil is a colonialist state no difference than France during the occupation. It will be made clear that no bases will be tolerated on Algerian territory, and that the UAR will fight for Arab independence, be it as part of the UAR or an independent Algeria.
Message to the Algerian Government
Should the Algerian Armed Forces engage our own, we will make it clear to them that the UAR does not seek to fight Algeria or does it wish to cost them their military equipment. The UAR is acting solely to prevent Brazil from encircling our nation and occupying Algeria the same way it occupied Angola. Should the Army stand down and refrain from assisting Brazil in anti-UAR operations, the UAR would not harm them or expensive Algerian weapons systems. The UAR does not wish to spill Arab blood.

2020.11.22 21:29 globalwp [EVENT] Vision 2060: The Falcon Has Risen Part I

The United Arab Republic has consolidated much of its powerbase and has leveraged its large economy in order to help industrialize the nation. The nation has begun work on a project called Vision 2060 which would hopefully bring great wealth and development to the rest of the nation. As the poor and impoverished masses from Dubai to Tunis have been liberated from their elitist overlords, the nation must now move forward in order to enrich every Arab from Mashriq to Maghrib. As the vision 2050 project came to a close, with a resounding success, bringing education, literacy, infrastructure, and internet connectivity to millions, Vision 2060 seeks to build off of that to further develop the infrastructure in the country.
I'll be Working on the Railroad
Under previous administrations, the UAR has developed high speed lines within Iraq, between Iraq and Syria, between Syria and Jordan, and developed similar lines to Riyadh, Jeddah, and along the gulf coast to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. With large scale transportation corridors comes great amounts of development and trade. The $15b high speed railroad project will see the nation be connected like never before with a top speed of 420 km/hr with an expected completion date of 2055, with the phases working concurrently and the railway infrastructure owned by Arab Railways.
As such, the program will be expanded upon significantly, with:
Regional Specialization
The UAR has identified several regions where specialization of industry has taken place. A long standing policy of the UAR was to develop key regions as hubs for certain industries in order to capitalize on low manufacturing costs, and low shipping costs resulting from the proximity of the UAR to the Chinese BRI and European markets. Thus far, the following industries are located in these states:
Looking at the niche sectors that each region has specialized in, it is evident where additional investment is needed. Starting with Yemen, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and Hejaz, the federal government has announced a massive infrasturcture spending package that would help modernize the poorer elements of UAR society and further assist in economic growth. Future plans for the gulf region, Najd, Shammar, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq are also being planned on the horizon being set to be announced.
Starting with the weakest link, the Yemeni economy is in significant need of an overhaul. The poorest territory of the UAR has largely survived off of remittances from family members working as construction or factory workers elsewhere in the UAR, in addition to equalization payments. While much of its population is now decently educated and has access to the internet as a result of previous programs in he early 2020s, the nation has yet to see a large scale industry develop beyond traditional industries. The UAR has nonetheless helped stabilize the country and bring a robust political structure with it amenable to economic growth.
As such, the federal government would like to invest greater funds in developing agricultural collectives to distribute farming equipment and maximize yields of the famous Yemeni Coffee for export at the port of Mocha in addition to subsidies to expand the fishing economy. Yemen's large 9b barrel fields will also be tapped into, and modern refining techniques will be used to transform the nation that is on a major trade route into an industrialized one. $5b will be invested in these programs and an additional $8b will be used to nationalize the existing petroleum and natural resource industries as well as establish a new modern port in Aden.
To develop yet another industry, the tourism industry will be overhauled given Yemen's status as one of the oldest civilizations in recorded history, the first to have skyscrapers which still stand today, and the strange and almost alien-like flora and fauna on the island territory of Socotra. The Isle of Socotra and Yemen proper will receive a $2b tourism package to build a series of tourist resorts on the island to bring in large amounts of wealth from abroad.
Lastly, the UAR will invest in a new nuclear power plant in the territory some 50 km north of San'aa which will provide energy to much of the territory.
The Tunisian economy is notably weaker than the rest of the UAR barring Yemen, and is comparable to that of Lebanon proper without the extensive transportation and trade network between Lebanon and the rest of the UAR. Tunisia itself is not particularly rich in natural resources, but has a highly educated young population that is more than capable of developing IP. The territory is also very close to Italy, which makes it an ideal choice for a Maghrebi transit route to Europe.
As such, the UAR Federal government has seen fit to utilize its large scale industry to establish a large port city known as "Qarthaj al-Jadida", or New Carthage for $40b. New Carthage will be built on a relatively empty coastal plain near Tunis. This new metropolis will be designed sustainably using solar and wind power, and will focus primarily on driving down the cost of production for electronic components and modern appliances, making it an appealing target for foreign investors seeking lower costs abroad. The new city will be compact, with large imposing skyscrapers dotting its Central Business District, and low emission manufacturing facilities further from residential facilities. It is hoped that New Carthage will bring great employment opportunities to the people in Tunisia and better integrate its economy with the rest of the UAR.
Tunis and other major cities will similarly receive upgrades to their infrastructure which is aging, with new metro lines being built as well as enhanced utilities and 5G+ internet services.
The Libyan economy will similarly see great investment from the central government. One of the hallmarks of Libyan engineering is the great manmade river project. The UAR will resurrect the project in order to attempt to turn the desert green, with great help from Bayer and their resistant agricultural technologies. Additional funds will be invested in reclaiming much of the North African desert into productive territory. Much of the reclaimed desert farm projects will be built along the southern road built to the Chadian border.
In addition to petroleum and agriculture, the Libyan coast is located very close to Europe and would therefore benefit from establishing a port in Bengazi and new petroleum infrastructure and refineries to deliver this refined product at a lower cost directly to Europe and abroad. Thus the UAR will invest $15b in a new LNG terminal, refineries, and pipelines to transport these goods
As one of the economic heavyweights of the UAR, the large and populous territory is to see dramatic change over the next few years. Given the limited real estate in Egypt and an ever growing population, the territory has seen a large amount of emigration to the rest of the UAR, with the Egyptian dialect being heard in virtually every corner of the territory. While this has naturally driven housing prices down in Egypt, it is not enough to adequately develop the territory.
Thus the UAR an Egyptian State government have announced a new program to help build over 400,000 housing units for the poorest Egyptians. Utilizing panel technologies which were revolutionary in rebuilding Syria, Iraq, and Palestine, a truly modern mobile city will be built at a low cost to help the average Egyptian once again be able to afford rent. A state owned housing collective will be established for this purpose.
Moreover, the UAR largely imports panel technology from Laurentia. This provides Egypt, a nation with a very powerful construction industry with the ability to begin producing panels for modular construction locally rather than import them. This program will help further Egypt's advantage as a hub for construction manufacturing and construction companies, with its distance to and from the Mashriq and Maghrib being very close, drastically reducing the cost of construction.
Lastly, the UAR's steel industry is lacking compared to that of China or Laurentia. As such, the UAR will be investing in expanding Helwan Steelworks capitalizing on Egypt's central location, and again, the fact that its a construction hub. A total of $30b will be invested in these initiatives.
In addition to the new Hejazi railway that would bring millions of pilgrims during hajj and umra, the UAR will invest in expanding the two mosques and the hajj infrastructure to accommodate an ever so increasing stream of pilgrims to the holy cities. New hotels, vertical Tawaf platforms using panel technologies, and shuttles will be built in order to facilitate the transport of millions of people during the sacred month. The Hajj project is to cost some $5b and would almost double the capacity of the Hajj and Umra bringing even more funds to the region.
Furthermore, moving away from what was Saudi policy and moving back to the Hashemite and Ottoman practices, a ministry for the historic preservation of Al-Haramain will be established that will work towards relocating and preserving lost cultural artifacts destroyed by Saudi Arabia from 1980 onwards.

2020.11.14 00:44 Brothanogood Pandemic or Not, Visa Remains a Growth Stock Stalking Its Biggest Rival, Cash

Visa stock has made investors more than 1,000% over the past decade -- peppy for an organization that dates back to the Eisenhower administration. But here comes a gaggle of app-based hopefuls eyeing not just the toll roads that make credit cards work, but also the $2 trillion in worldwide revenues collected for payments of all kinds.
You know about PayPal (ticker: PYPL) and maybe Square (SQ) and Venmo. How about Remitly, Stripe, Circle, and Bolt? There are dozens more with Seussian names. To skip out on a dinner check with under-30s, just mock the encryption protocol of their favorite fintech platform, and tell them you'll froop them ticklecoins.
I spoke this past week with Visa (V) chief Al Kelly about the competitive landscape in payments. That's a sensitive subject now, because Visa is trying to buy a company called Plaid, which serves as a data go-between for banks and apps. For example, Venmo uses Plaid. This month, the Department of Justice sued to block the deal, alleging that it would deprive consumers of a potential alternative to Visa. Kelly calls the deal pro-consumer and says Visa will fight the suit vigorously. "We feel very, very good about that," he says.
Visa was spawned from the first true credit card -- the paper, $300-limit BankAmericard, launched in 1958. Bank of America kept the credit business but licensed the financial plumbing for cards to other banks. This eventually became Visa, and a rival system launched in 1966 became Mastercard (MC). Today, Visa links 70 million sellers with 3.5 billion account credentials issued by 13,000 banks. It collects fees per transaction for authorization, clearing, and settlement, and it sells add-on services for things like detecting fraud and increasing customer loyalty.
This year, I've come to view paying in cash and receiving change as the financial equivalent of shaking hands during a bilateral sneeze. Giving over a credit card for swiping, or sliding my own and pawing a number pad, is more like an elbow bump -- better, but do we really have to? Tap-to-pay is the norm in most of the world, but not the U.S. -- yet. Kelly says it will be common here soon. If past patterns from other markets repeat, tap-to-pay will bring a big jump in the percentage of U.S. transactions done with cards.
Card adoption is already climbing -- to 82.1% of in-store transactions from 78.7% in January, according to industry researcher The NPD Group. But opportunities for spending have shriveled. So, during Visa's fiscal year ended in September, revenues decreased 5%, to $21.8 billion, and earnings per share fell 7%, to $5.04. Visa is larger than Mastercard and is particularly dominant in debit cards, but Mastercard has been growing faster, especially in Europe. Both have been smaller for years than China's UnionPay.
Analysts call these networks card rails, and the bank-controlled Automated Clearing House, or ACH, system for money transfers, bank rails. Many upstart players operate as digital wallets that depend in part on card or bank rails, or else use cryptocurrency. Kelly says the payments industry is filled with "frenemies." For example, PayPal, the best-known digital wallet for online purchases, used to steer customers to cheaper ACH rather than Visa cards. Now, under a partnership, Visa gets equal footing with ACH, and PayPal makes inroads at stores using Visa's contactless mobile-payment technology.
Stocks in general trade at elevated valuations now, and growth stocks especially. Even so, Visa's price of 38 times this fiscal year's estimated earnings suggests that investors feel confident about its future role in payments, and its return to speedy growth. This fiscal year, earnings-per-share growth is pegged at just 9%, as the pandemic continues and then hopefully lifts. Early estimates for next year's growth put it at 24%. Beyond the tap-to-pay rollout and spending rebound, Visa is hoping to win over push transactions that use bank rails -- like tuition, rent, and wages. Banks will have a say, but they make good money on card businesses, and ACH is a nonprofit.
China is a wild card. Visa doesn't have a license to operate there domestically, so it partners with local players like AliPay to create new uses for travelers' Visa cards. But phase one of the trade deal between China and the Trump administration is supposed to open China to foreign payment companies like Visa. We'll see. For now, Kelly calls cash his biggest competitor. I'm Purelling just thinking about all that market share up for grabs.
The stock market is said to be driven by the battle between greed and fear. Right now, it looks more like hope and stupidity. The vaccine results announced this past week by Pfizer (PFE) are the best hope yet that the pandemic's end is in sight. That vaccine and perhaps others could receive emergency-use authorization within the next two months, and much of America could receive needle pokes in the first half of next year. Life could look normal by Thanksgiving 2021.
But the virus is raging like never before. We've turned simple advice -- keep a bit of distance or wear masks -- into a culture war. And Washington is distracted. That President Donald Trump is denying clear election results is folly. That an overwhelming majority of his party's senators won't speak up is dangerous. If it doesn't damage our democracy, it could kill us by the tens of thousands this winter from inaction on the virus. And it could cripple our economy again.
"Sell the vaccine," wrote Bank of America in an investment strategy note on Friday. It means to reduce holdings of risky assets ahead of what could be a difficult stretch before the economy reopens in earnest. Like Goldman Sachs, BofA is recommending a barbell strategy, with cyclicals on one side, but not distressed ones, and the sort of virus-immune tech stocks that have been flourishing all along on the other.
I know; I dipped too far into politics there for a moment. Media bias, a few will say, and they're right. I don't endorse politicians or parties, but secretly, I'm in the tank for science and representative democracy.

2020.11.13 22:07 awoiaf Maester's Monthly Meta Magazine: 7th Moon, 383 AC

The Sixth Moon of 383 A.C. has ended, and the Seventh Moon begins!
Once every two weeks, we'll be posting a turn thread just like this one. Here you can do many things - post evidence for new skills, post your economy actions, participate in monthly awards, or join in on discussions and conversations with the sub as a whole. Make sure you check the Date Conversion Sheet to see when the current Moon will end and the next one will begin. While you may post into a turn thread at any point during the month, certain things - like subterfuge and economy - are dependent on the day you post them. Other things - like skill training - are adjusted only once a turn, at the very end of the IG month. This means you can wait until the two weeks are nearly up, and then proceed to post your evidence for learning a new skill. Editing posts after a thread has been closed is a method of metagaming. While we trust that each of you are working for the best of your story and the sub as a whole, in cases where edits create uncertainty, the decision will work in favor of the party who did not make the edit. If you wish to make changes, let a mod know, and they can be done in a separate, new comment.
These threads are designed to keep everything in one easy place, and to provide news - both IC, and OOC - to the sub as a whole. Make sure to read them thoroughly, and to ask the mods or your fellow players if you have any questions or concerns. We all aim to make this sub a great and welcoming place - which means we must all work together to ensure it remains fair, functioning, and fun. With that, we're ready to begin!
[The turn thread will close at 1600 EST/ 2100 GMT, 27th of November].

The Royal entourage and Small Council arrived at Casterly Rock for the wedding of Mace Tyrell and Briony Lannister. The combined fleets of the crown and Braavos sail to defeat a deadly foe while Lord Rykker arrives in a rather empty capital. In the absence of much the nobility the spotlight falls to smaller folk such as merchants trying to survive dangerous times. Lord Mace sent an envoy to the Braavosi and orders the arrest of the duplicitous Lady Gower. The Queen finds herself beset with indecision and machinations at all sides and Prince Mace Tyrell gathers all the nobility at the Rock for a special meeting.
Nothing of note occurred in the Reach this moon.
Ser Nate Patrek Clarence Frey of the Crossing is victorious over the upstart Reeds, easily storming the walls of Heronholt, freeing House Erenford. Lord Theomore Reed and his daughter Serena are captured by Ser NPC, and taken back to the Twins, where Willas and Lawrence Baelish await the outcome of the battle.
Meanwhile in Harrenhal, Leo Blackwood, suitor for Lady Jirelle’s hand in marriage, ponders his future.
Just up north from there, Lord Axel Roote commences construction of a library, before deciding to head to King’s Landing.
The North
The Northmen meet the Sistermen in battle, but the Sunderlands counteroffer with a duel to end the siege. But the Sunderlands welch on their offer, and the siege continues.
Meanwhile, a Manderly girl meets a secret lover. The Reed Rebellion ends with the surrender of Greywater Watch.
The bastard commander of the Gold cloaks, Cregan Snow, informs the lords of the realm of the Golden Company's attack on Westeros. Back in the North, the green dreams of Kayn Stark reunite him with his beloved Queen Myrcella all the while Robb Stark meets with Jirelle Baelish.
Lord Androw Hightower arrives in Casterly Rock for the upcoming nuptials, and finds time to scour the region for a rare resource, and a bear. He finds no sign of the former, and butchers the latter. Later in the moon, he receives two disturbing letters regarding the fate of King’s Landing, and the arrival of the Golden Company, prompting him to seek a private audience with the Queen.
Much further south, Lady Florence Mullendore holds a harvest festival, and entertains many guests from all over the realm.
Meanwhile in Oldtown, an entrepreneurial Florent bastard discusses business in the Hightower, before journeying to Timberhold, encountering loans, libraries, and shadowcats.
A little up north, Lady Regina Beesbury personally maintains her bees.
In the hot deserts of Dorne, Princess Elia Martell sits in the esteemed Water Gardens as her grandson speaks to her. Elsewhere in Sunspear, Tamira Ladybright’s stay in the Dornish seat is further entertained with the Daynes. While Serwyn Martell has a chat with his grandmother. As news spreads of the Golden Company’s actions, Prince Lewyn Martell calls a council of his bannermen.
Meanwhile over in King’s Landing, does some shopping for ingredients
This moon begins with gossip spreading of the origin of the pirate attacks that had plagued the region. Rumor has it that the Hand of the Queen had sponsored the attacks, but to what end, no one could be sure.
Lord Arlan Baratheon first hears of this unsettling news from Lady Elenei Gower, and later receives a letter from Mace Tyrell himself, informing him that Elenei is to be arrested for spreading claims of treason. He confronts her, and questions the legitimacy of the news, but they are interrupted by the apprehension of a spy.
Arlan would later receive news of the true origin of pirate attacks from none other than Lieutenant Lia Cole of the Golden Company. She confesses the so called pirate king was actually an admiral leading her company’s fleet on a rogue mission of destruction. Furthermore, she informs the Baratheon that the fleet now sails under true orders, to take proactive measures against Westeros, for they fear retribution from the Crown. After this confession, she pledges her sword to Arlan, forsaking her allegiance to the Golden Company. Lia’s words ring true, for a letter had been received from King’s Landing, only a day earlier, of the sighting of Golden Company ships near Claw Isle. The harried lord sends warnings to all the high lords of the realm.
A war council is held at Storm’s End to plan the strategy against this threat, and among the Stormlander lords sits Lord Velaryon and the Sealord of Braavos, newly arrived with their respective fleets.
Lord Atlas Selmy was the first to arrive at Storm’s End, and after settling in, writes letters to his wife and his bannerman to raise their levies for the coming conflict ahead. He finds shelter for his armies in Griffin’s Roost and Long Horn, while receiving the delightful news of another little Selmy in the oven. Meanwhile, his son bolsters the roster of their shady enterprise in King’s Landing.
Also in attendance is Lord Ormund Wylde, who catches up with his Horpe nephew before sailing to Storm’s End. The Penroses, Dondarrions, and Bucklers, catch up on the demise of the so called pirate king as they journey together to the council. The late Admiral Qoherys’ fleet finally returns to Pentos, and news of his rogue actions in the Stormlands are relayed to the officers of the Golden Company. Fearing retribution from Westeros, a council is held, and it is decided the Golden Company fleet will undertake a preemptive strike, and cripple coastal defenses. Lia Cole heads for Westeros to soften the Westeros reaction, but not before a chat with a Rogare. An officer of legion left behind to defend the city trains his men. Also left to their devices, two sergeants discuss future prospects
Before departure, they receive interesting news of gathering forces in Westeros, possibly directing the fleet to their first destination, Dragonstone. The new Lord Redwyne brokers a deal with the Golden Company - hostages and gold for inaction.
Meanwhile, company agents in Braavos probe the secret city, and before long the Golden Company fleet arrives just outside its shores, launching a devastating attack against a depleted fleet. The outnumbered Braavos ships flee, but the golden skulls give chase, and their fate appears grim. Shortly after the battle, a touched officer receives a vision of Lia Cole’s actions in Storm’s End, while other officers discuss future plans. On the other side of the board, the distraught son of the Sealord sends letters of alarm.
The rise of the Golden Company has attracted fellow sellsword companies from across Essos. An envoy of the Bright Banners arrives to probe interest, before strolling the streets of Pentos. Over in Norvos, his company debates the merits of joining the Golden Company, and decide to march west.
Also somewhere in the disputed lands, the Second Sons have refused to renew their contract with Volantis, and march west, hoping for better prospects.

2020.11.11 11:12 Persimmonpluot Did Oakey "Al" Kite's killer murder a Kentucky man in 2008?

I came across the unresolved murder of Kentucky resident, Jim Duckett that seems to have no posts in this sub. What struck me about the crime were some similarities with the unsolved murder of Oakey "Al" Kite whose case has been featured here several times. I have followed Kite's case for years and regularly check for progress or updates. I'm curious to see if anybody else thinks the two cases might be related or if I'm way off with that idea?
Kite's murder took place on or around May 22, 2004 and Duckett's body was discovered on November 10, 2008 but it's estimated he was killed on November 9, 2008. Kite was 53 and Duckett was 43 at the time of deaths. Both crimes were particularly brutal and neither have any known motive. Below I'll provide overviews of both crimes.
Background to Kite's murder
Oakey "Al" Kite was a single, divorcee who lived alone in an Aurora, Colorado townhouse that he purchased in 1998. He had a step-daughter he remained close to but no other children. Since 2002, Kite had been employed by a consulting firm in Denver. Prior to that, he was employed for 31 years by the engineering firm, Stone and Webster which had taken him to both coasts, several years in Algeria and finally to Colorado before the company was auctioned off in bankruptcy resulting in Kite being laid off.
In 1998, Kite moved to Colorado and by all accounts he enjoyed a socially active, middle-class lifestyle. Kite was described as a kind, trusting, and generous individual who lived a very low risk life. At the time of his murder, he was in a serious relationship with a woman named Linda who he had met through mutual friends. Kite enjoyed the outdoors and golfing with friends and colleagues.
In May 2004, his longtime tenant moved out and he sought out a replacement for his basement apartment that consisted of a small bedroom, a family room and a bathroom. He posted an ad in the University of Colorado's Medical School's library and in a local newspaper. A man who called himself "Robert Cooper" answered Al's post and agreed to rent the space. Cooper stated that he was from the East Coast and was employed by Well's Fargo Bank. He claimed that he had just transferred to a Colorado branch and was currently living at his sister's home. During his initial visit, Al's girlfriend, Linda stopped by and he informed her that Cooper was downstairs and he wanted them to meet. Al's girlfriend needed to quickly use the restroom before meeting. However, Linda only caught a quick glimpse of Cooper as he hurried out the door without saying hello. Days later, Linda says that Kite told her that Cooper was going to rent the space.
The Crime
On May 22, 2004, Al drove Linda to the airport so that she could catch a flight to her brother's home in Virginia Beach. Al told Linda that he had plans to make a few repairs on the apartment and to help Cooper move in a few heavy items.
Linda first called Kite while on a layover, and again at 3:30 pm when she arrived at her destination. She described Kite as being uncharacteristically quiet during the calls. Later, she reasoned that his behavior was likely related to the presence of the new tenant. Linda was the last person Kite spoke to. On Sunday, Kite failed to keep a golf date and on Monday he did not show up for work which caused his workplace to eventually call his sister who was listed as an emergency contact. Since she was in Virginia, she called the Aurora police who did a wellness check. This led to the discovery of his body.
Kite's body was found in the basement's small bedroom. He was hogtied with cords and very specific ligatures and knots. He had been mercilessly tortured and beaten prior to death. He endured such things as an icepick type object inserted in his ears and possibly his eyes. His feet had been severely beaten with noticeable marks and injuries, he was stabbed and his head had several blunt force trauma injuries, including a large deadly wound. It was estimated that the torture took place over several hours but that Kite likely died on May 22. The upstairs showed no signs of a struggle. Among items police retrieved from the house was a discarded rental application with Robert Cooper's information. Kite's truck was missing.
Some Investigative Details
Further investigation revealed that none of Cooper's information was valid. Police also believe that Cooper remained in the home after killing Kite. He ate food, showered, slept in Kite's bed, and even wore some of his clothing. He put several knives, other small weapons, the house keys Kite had given him, and some other items in the kitchen sink and filled it with bleach. Kites truck, phone, and wallet were missing. Cooper used Kite's truck to drive to an ATM machine where he withdrew $1000. Kite had a substantial amount of money available but he only made one withdrawal. He was captured on camera making the withdrawal but he's wearing gloves and his face is mostly concealed by a ski mask. He also used several of Kite's credit cards but no details about those purchases have been released. He dumped Kite's truck a few blocks from his home then took then returned to Kite's home and put the keys in the bleach.
Police quickly heard from a handful of community members who had also posted ads that Cooper responded to. Luckily, they had met with him to show their rooms. However, Cooper's story and appearance were rather fluid and everybody seemed to have met somebody different. Witnesses described him as ranging from late 20s to mid 50s. At times he affected an accent while others detected none. Linda and two of Kite's neighbors also provided witness information to assist police. His physical description can be founds online or at the links posted below. When he presented himself to Kite, he walked with a severe limp and carried a cane but others said he walked without a limp or cane. One witness said she got the creeps from Cooper but the others detected nothing off. Police were able to physically connect to UC medical school because some of the witnesses had only posted flyers on the campus. However, nothing materialized.
This is getting too long so I'll end Kite's story with one more detail. Police were able to trace Cooper's phone and it was a burner purchased near the UC medical school campus and it had only been used to contact potential landlords. After the murder, Cooper purposefully placed the burner phone and Kite's phone in a area were homeless congregated so they would be taken and used in order to throw police off. His crime was very well planned and full of false information intended to stall investigators.
Investigators did recover a single drop of blood in Kite's home that they have since used to developed a genetic profile in hopes of making a hit. So far, they have not found their man though they have some firm ideas and possible ethnicities. Several theories and possible motives have been explored but I don't personally believe any of them are likely. Police do not believe robbery was a motive. I agree and tend to think this individual is a complete psychopath who enjoys the act of binding, torturing and killing. Witness sketch here Kite phenotypic information
James "Jim" Duckett's murder
Like Kite, Duckett was a bachelor. Duckett lived with his 7 month old rescue mutt at 5300 Rockbridge Road in Shelbyville, Kentucky. The 3 bedroom 1400 sq ft. brick house is situated in somewhat of a rural area but it's not isolated. The house is currently on the market if anybody is curious. Shelbyville is located midway between Louisville and Lexington.
Duckett lived a quiet and peaceful life. He loved animals and often rode horses and he attended and volunteered at a church near his home. He wasn't involved in any behavior that might expose him to a criminal element. He was described as a kind and helpful individual with a great sense of humor who liked to please others.
The murder
Duckett, a disabled veteran, was 43 when he was killed. He had enjoyed a career in the Army, including several years of active duty in Desert Storm. Following an injury, he left the military and moved to Germany where he spent several years working as a crime scene investigator. A few years prior to his murder, he decided to move to Kentucky so he could be near his sister and her family. His plan was to help her out with the kids and the family's other needs. He was the father of an adult son who was not living with him. By all accounts, he was very close with his family.
His sister, Katherine Nichols considered him her best friend, and she said that they spoke by phone several times a day. She also stated that in the month prior to his murder, he has expressed a desire to sell his home and move. In part, his feelings were related to a robbery that occured at his home on Halloween just weeks before his murder. He was not home when his house was robbed and I haven't found any specific details about that situation. There could be a connection but it may be a red herring. Regardless, Nichols said her brother was just a bit off the last month of his life but she couldn't say why.
Nichols said she and Duckett spent several hours together on the day he was likely murdered. They had gone shopping and she noted that nothing seemed amiss until she was unable to reach him later that evening. She said it was unusual for Duckett to not return her messages so she drove to his house but did not stop. That was a Saturday night. By the next morning when she still had no word, she began to panic. Consequently, she phoned some of his church friends to see if they had see him. They had not so She felt compelled to find him. She went to his home again and when she arrived, she noted his new truck was not there. When an uneasy feeling, she decided to use a key he had given her to enter the home.
Inside she discovered a bloody scene and her brothers dead body at the center on a chair that had been moved into the bathroom. Her initial thought was suicide but then she noticed that his limbs were tied to the chair. She ran out of the house and called police. Police arrived within minutes, declared Duckett dead, and began their investigation.
The investigation revealed that Duckett had been tortured and beaten for hours before he died. He was covered in injuries. A deep cut to his throat had caused his death. His puppy was found locked in another room. His brand new truck was missing along with his wallet. I found no information regarding weapons or items seized from the home.
His truck was recovered later that day parked about a mile from his home with the keys in it. The killer had used Duckett's truck to drive to an ATM to withdraw money from Duckett's account. The ATM was equipped with a camera but the blurry image was unable to provide any real clues about identity. The photo shows a man whose face appears mostly covered by a mask in the driver's seat of Duckett's truck. He wore gloves. It's been 12 years and no arrests have been made or motives revealed.
Duckett's murder provided few clues and investigators have not revealed many details so it's impossible to know if Duckett may have had any dealings that might have opened up him and his home to such a violent attack. His family continues to keep his case publicized in the hopes that somebody will come forward with information.
I'm interested in any feedback regarding the two cases. Could these two murders be connected? I've always believed Kite's killer had and would kill again but am I grasping at straws with these similarities? Killer's blurry image can be seen here Duckett case

2020.11.07 16:43 JohnnyGSG9 Maronite Society at the End of the XVI Century.

This study is aimed at analyzing the history of the Maronites relative to one of their most critical periods, between the Mamluk domination (1252 A.D.) and the Ottoman rule (1516 A.D.).
Under Mamluk domination, which extended from the second half of the XIII century until the beginning of the XVI century, the Maronites became the target of all kinds of adversity. Maronite regions were completely devastated and a good number of them migrated to Cyprus where the Crusaders were still in control.
Before the advent of Ottoman reign, however, and after a period of retreat, recuperation and reflection, the Maronites succeeded in regenerating their energies. This led them into an epoch of spiritual and cultural development, in which they quickly advanced on all levels: in demographic growth, in scientific and technical evolution and in economic and social progress.
Consequently, having attained a high degree of maturity, the Maronites were able to contribute greatly, not only to the formation of their own community, but also to the identity of Lebanon and its consolidation as a state. Thus was born what was called the "Maronite Nation," a nation founded on the principles of knowledge and action, on liberty and justice, on authenticity and openness, on spiritual life and respect for others.
In fact, by the time of the Ottoman occupation of Lebanon in 1516, the Maronites were ready for a new era of renewal. The difference between this period and the preceding centuries was great. It can be considered the age of renaissance of the Maronite Nation and ushered in its rapid development.
From then on, the Maronites were able to move about more freely and became more open in their relations. They effectively began to acquire the true characteristics of the Maronite Nation in the XVI and XVIII centuries and were functioning as a well-organized society headed toward realizing its aims of excellence and prosperity.
Evidence of this evolution can be found in a number of historical documents. For our study, we focus on only two writings which contain particularly important information. Both date to the XVI century and were written by two separate emissaries sent by the Apostolic See to inquire about the state of the Maronites during that period.
The first document, which is one of the earliest reports on the Maronites and was written in Italian, was presented to Pope Gregory XIII in 1579 by Father Jean-Baptiste Eliano of the Society of Jesus. This document is a firsthand account describing the situation of the Maronites, as perceived by an actual eye-witness. (Anaissi: 1921: 56-61 and Kuri: 1989: 180-187)
The Maronites, however, reacted negatively to this report, noting that to a certain extent, it did not faithfully express the complete truth about their spiritual status. Their subsequent complaints before the Holy See provoked the dispatching of a second delegation, headed by Father Jérôme Dandini.
Like the first document, the second one was written in Italian and was presented by Dandini to Pope Clément VIII in 1596. The Maronites of that time judged that this second report more faithfully reflected the reality of their spiritual situation.
The reservation of the Maronites over the first report, as Dandini later stated, is justified by the fact that its author, Eliano, attributed to Patriarch Michel Rizzi (1567-1581) words that he did not utter. (Feghali 1962: 51) Moreover, Eliano's report included liturgical and theological errors he pretended to have taken out of books he found in certain parishes, although the Maronites had long before taken these books out of circulation.
Our study is based principally on the first report, which is divided into three parts. Part One is an introduction, in which the author tries to define the Maronite community of the XVI century, while Part Two and Three deal with the Maronite community's spiritual and civil organizations. These three parts serve as a plan for our discourse.
Meanwhile, our comparison with the second report, as well as with other documents and writings, will serve to give a more exact and precise image of the organization of Maronite society at the end of the XVI and the beginning of the XVII centuries.
Eliano wrote: "These people the Maronites … almost all of them live in the towns of Mount Lebanon above Tripoli and Beirut in an area facing the Occident…. Some of their families reside in Damascus, Aleppo, Tripoli and the Island of Cyprus. All together they do not exceed approximately forty thousand strong". (Anaissi, 1921: 56)
Three elements in this definition prompt our comment: the people or the community, the country or the place of their habitation , and their demographic number.
The People
Eliano wrote that the Maronites form a people. This means that, even in the harsh and difficult circumstances of their most oppressive period, almost to their quasi-extinction, the Maronites were considered a people, united and interdependent as an organized society and not simply dispersed individuals. They had their own areas, their towns and villages, their liturgy, their prayers, their behavior and traditions, their own costumes, their way of life, their scholars and books, their army and their internal and external relations.
Dandini talks only of the Maronite Nation. In his address to the Pope for example, he begins "I, whom you have honored by sending him last year (1595) as a delegate to Mount Lebanon, to examine the situation of the Maronite Nation…." Later, he implores the Holy Father to take the
Maronite Nation under his protection and calls his attention to the importance and necessity of the Apostolic See's relations with the East through these Catholic people as intermediaries.
In a positive response to his proposition, the Pope confirmed Dandini in his mission as ambassador to the Maronites and expressed his satisfaction and happiness toward the Maronite Nation by nominating his nephew as their protector in Rome. (Dandini 1921: 231, 234)
The Country
This People-Nation was an organized entity even in its most detailed geographic moves and extensions. It had its permanent places of residence, most of the time fortified by nature, where it could savor its religious and national life, in full freedom and tranquility and without constraints or humiliation .
This People had its mobile emissaries, who moved everywhere in search of subsistence and work, but who always remembered the villages of their origin, where the large number of their brothers resided and where they could return during times of challenge or misery.
According to Dandini's report, as well as the writings of Ibn Al-Kela'i and other contemporary historians, the majority of the Maronite people inhabited towns and villages in Mount Lebanon, dominating Tripoli and Beirut and facing the West. Specifically, this means the regions of Ehden-Al-Zawiya, Jubbat Bsharri-Bilad Al-Batroun, and Jubbat Al-Mnaïtra-Bilad Jbeil to Nahr Ibrahim. These contiguous or neighboring regions formed a strategic triangle, which guaranteed the security of the Maronites and constituted the principal center of their religious and national lives. It was within this triangle that the Maronites joined their brothers in faith. With the Islamic conquest of the VII century, there began an influx of Maronites arriving in successive waves to live in Lebanon. This influx subsided after the destruction of their principal center -- Saint Maron's convent on the Orontes River in the region of Apamea in Syria Seconda -- in the middle of the X century.
Beyond this strategic residential triangle, many other Maronite families settled in diverse neighboring areas:
On the Island of Cyprus, since the VIII century but increasingly after the retreat of the Crusaders in 1291. South of Nahr Ibrahim, after the dispersion of the Shiites by the Mamluks in 1305. In the region of the Shouf, after Prince Fakhreddin inherited the Emirate (princedom) of his father Korkomaz in 1584. In the Metn, the Gharb and the Jurd, once these regions were entrusted to Fakhreddin in 1591 and the 'Assaf Emirate was abolished in Kesrouan and replaced by the Banou-Saïfa. Like their predecessors, the Banou-Saïfa favored the Shiites at the expense of the Maronites, especially the Hamadeh tribe in Jubbat Al-Mnaïtra, Kesrouan and Jubbat Bsherri. With Fakhreddin in Sidon in 1592, in the Bekaa and Beirut in 1594. In the Kesrouan again, when Fakhreddin reigned anew in 1605. In Safa, Damascus and other regions, everywhere were Fakhreddin reigned, his friends the Maronites resided for reasons which we will analyze in the body of this study. Demography It is difficult to determine with precision the number of Maronites during this epoch, even if Eliano pretended they did not surpass forty thousand. Without doubt, Eliano faced major difficulties in arriving at this figure, especially keeping in mind the impossibility of making a population census
At that time and particularly in view of the continued dispersion of the Christians. It may be that Eliano was inspired by a source that was available to him -- the book of the Crusader historian Guillaume of Tyre (+1183), in which the same figure was given without conducting a census or checking with reliable sources.
However, in a letter addressed to the Emperor Charles Quint in 1528, the Patriarch Moussa Al-'Akkari wrote "The Maronites possess 40,000 archers, well trained and all disposed to be put in your service". (Daou 1981: 180) Obviously, it is not possible that the total number of Maronites could be 40,000 in 1578, while in 1527 the number of the archers alone was 40,000.
On the other hand, in his letter to Pope Gregoire XIII, the Patriarch Michel Rizzi (1567-1581) recorded that "the Maronites of Lebanon inhabit approximately 200 villages and towns." It is evident that the Maronites avoided establishing small villages and preferred to live in dense concentrations to escape the raids and be able to more easily defend themselves. We have actual evidence of these compact and adjoining clusters as in Zghorta, Bsharri, Hadcheet, Beka'-Kafra, Tannourine, 'Akoura and others. (Feghali 1962: 36)
Moreover, we can cite the testimony of Katchiamari, who wrote in 1605 to Ferdinand I the Prince of Tuscany, that Emir Fakhreddin when "organizing a crusade to the Holy Land, he can count on 20,000 Christian from the mountain," i.e. the Maronites. (Karali 1935: 70)
The traveler Domingo Magri relates that, in 1624, the Emir had increased his principality due to his cooperation with the Maronites. In fact, there were 20,000 Maronites in his ranks and the majority of the Emir's chieftains were recruited from among them. (Karali, 1935: 38 and Daou 1981: 220)
Let us assume that the 40,000 number of archers claimed by Patriarch Moussa Al-'Akkari is exaggerated, and if we take the number to be 20,000 men as stated by other historians, we could conclude the total number of Maronites as 150,000. We arrive at this number by a simple deductive operation. If the normal proportion of mobilizing citizens was 13 percent during that era, the number necessary to mobilize 20,000 would be 150,000 persons.
It should be noted that the number 20,000 only concerns the Maronite villages and towns of the strategic triangle, i.e., the region of Ehden-Al-Zawiya, Jubbat Bsharri-Bilad Al-Batroun, Jubbat Al-Mnaïtra-Bilad Jbeil to Nahr Ibrahim. Outside this region, the mobilization of Christians would have been difficult and dangerous, since those who lived in Muslim areas were often obliged to live in disguise. Often, they would wear the white turban of the Muslims. They would sometimes deny belonging to the Christian religion. This was done to such an extent that they were called "The White Maronites" or even "The Maronites of cotton and linen," to signify that they were Christians and Muslims at the same time, as noted by Eliano himself at the end of his report. (Daou 1981: 166)
Under this title, Eliano insists on three points that he considered important: the religious hierarchical organization, the relations with the Holy See, and faith and liturgy.
The Religious Hierarchical Organization
Eliano wrote: "These people, have a chief 'in spiritualibus', he has the title of Patriarch of Antioch. He has under his order six archbishops and a few bishops, although without titles, poor and ignorant, they are called by hierarchy to the prelature. Knowing that in Syria all the ecclesiastic dignities are in the hands of the monks of Saint Anthony, like they are in Greece in the hands of the monks of Saint Basile…, the Patriarch, who is chosen from among these monks, governs his people through the intermediary of secular priests who are allied by the bond of marriage like the Greeks." (Anaissi 1921: 65)
As attested later by Dandini in his report and by Patriarch Estephane Ad-Douaihy in his history of the Maronites, Eliano confirms in his text that the religious organization of the Maronites is monastic and hermetic in character, which perfectly matches their origins.
It is certain that, since its appearance , Maronite society was distinguished from other Christian societies by its organization as a community, which was formed around Saint Maron's Monastery on the Orontes River. This group of Syriac people committed itself to live the faith of the monastery, which following the Council of Chalcedon was founded in 452 with the objective of defending the Council's positions. It was thus natural that the Maronite society would derive from the monastery its spirituality, organization and discipline.
Living under monastic influence and organization, the Maronite community formed "One Grand Monastery," where the Patriarch was the superior. Like Dandini said, "to him [the Patriarch] alone is given the right to organize the spiritual life of the community…. He is the summit of the pyramid and from him proceeds all authority in the Maronite Church." (Dandini 1665: 53-54)
During that period, the Patriarch was elected by the synod of bishops and notables, and the clergy and the people ratified his election according to ancient tradition. As soon as he was elected, he became the Superior General of this "One Grand Monastery."
The archbishops and bishops who aided the Patriarch in the administration of the parishes, were chosen from among the monks, because they take the vow chastity and are not married. However, according to Dandini, "there was found among them a married bishop, he was imprisoned in a convent to live with the monks and was prohibited from eating meat and from drinking wine." (Dandini 1656: 53)
As for the difference between the archbishops and the bishops, it had to do only with their jurisdictions. Dandini wrote that the word bishop was applied in the Maronite Church to two categories of persons. The first category included those charged with the administration of the monasteries without having pastoral duties. They did not have the right to wear the bishop's garb and distinctive emblems. They wore simple religious habits but were distinguished by wearing the miter and the cross during official celebrations. Toward the end of the XVI century, these bishops numbered six. As for the second category, it was formed of bishops who effectively assumed pastoral duties and managed the affairs the church. These bishops wore under their ordinary robes purple cassocks that reached the floor. They also wore a grand blue turban over their monastic cowl. (Dandini 1656: 54)
Since it was impossible for the Patriarch to visit distant parishes, he chose three bishops to assist him who also resided with him. One of the three was in charge of the temporal administration of the Patriarchal See of Qannoubine, whose duties essentially consisted of collecting the dues, the license fees and the harvest. The other two assistant bishops were charged with pastoral visits to the dioceses. In addition to these three bishops, three others were appointed for similar duties overseas and enjoyed full authority. The first resided in Damascus, the second in Aleppo and the third on the Island of Cyprus.
As for the other priests, the servants of the people, the Patriarch directly controlled their nomination. They had the right to marry before being ordained as priests. It was even more than a right; it was an obligation, for the people held single priests in suspicion. As for the deacons and sub-deacons, they didn't differ from the people except by their little white turbans.
The people closely followed this pyramidal organization. All the believers, without distinction of condition or social statue, enjoyed the right to confirm and ratify the ordination of the Patriarch and the bishops and to supervise the monks and the priests. All, young and old, met in the church at least two times a day, morning and evening, to pray, read the Bible, the Old Testament and the lives of Saints or to hear the sermon or participate in the liturgy. The multiplication of churches in villages and towns can only be explained by the extensive participation of people in religious life. We count, for example, more than thirty churches in the towns of 'Akoura, Tannourine, Bsharri and Ehden. There are even more than five churches in certain farms and hamlets. (Daou 1981: 188)
This hierarchical organization was not limited to the spiritual and liturgical domains, but extended also to the different important and decisive spheres of Maronite life. The Patriarch formed the summit of the pyramid. From him emanated all the authority necessary for the direction of spiritual and temporal affairs. To comprehend this cumulative authority, one must be reminded of the fundamental Maronite truth: the Maronites can not live and blossom but in light of one Kingdom – that of Heaven.
During the Ottoman Empire, the Sublime Porte appointed local governors known as the Moqaddam (and charged them with collecting taxes imposed by the Empire. In 1377, the Mamlukes captured Patriarch Jibrail Hjoula and burned him in Tripoli. This incident weakened the authority of the Patriarch and consequently that of the Maronite community. Ergo, in 1382 the new Maronite Moqaddam Ya'qub requested that the Patriarch recognizes his authority. (Salibi 1973: 20) What in fact took place is that the Patriarch ordained him Deacon of the Church and asked him to manage the temporal affairs of the community.
However, when one of the temporal leaders become disobedient, the Maronite people stayed on the lookout for him, like the time when Moqaddam 'Abdel-Men'em in 1488 called to his aid the Muslims of the Danniyeh. Once they arrived near Ehden, in the Hmeina Pass, the village inhabitants charged against them and exterminated them. This is how the power of the Moqaddams was counterbalanced and the Patriarch's ancient authority and sovereignty were maintained.
Relations with the Holy See
The organization of the Maronites would neither have been sustained nor have survived during the Mamluk and Ottoman centuries had it not been supported by allied forces which prevented its suffocation and asphyxiation and eliminated some of the obstacles in the way of its expansion and development.
The force that maintained the Maronite vigor is without doubt the Apostolic See. The Maronite Church has had the historic opportunity to stay in union with the Church of Rome since the Council of Chalcedon (451 A.D.) To this day, the relationship between the Maronites and the Holy See has never been broken. Whenever circumstances required, the Maronite Church did not hesitate to resort to the Church of Rome. It did so through all its difficulties and pains, its mistakes and wounds, its greatness and misery.
Eliano stated: "All [the Maronites] recognize that the Roman Pontiff is the Chief of the Christian Church, to whom they have vowed obedience for the past 370 years since 1215, and adhere to all the Brevets and Bulls sent by the various Popes to the various Patriarchs. Thanks to the occasional dispatch of ambassadors, they have preserved this union… All [The Maronites] without exception hold affection for the Holy Apostolic See and the College of Cardinals and do not speak of them but with great reverence…. Due to the passage of time and their interaction with other nations and sects incompatible to their own faith, some errors have crept into their books, rituals and offices due mostly to the lack of educational guidance and not to their lack of readiness to accept the teachings of the Roman Church. A citation of these claimed abuses and errors will be presented to the Apostolic Holy See…. However, these errors and others which we have found in their books do not indict their true faith. These books were being copied without any concern." (Cheikho 1923: 29)
According to Father Louis Cheikho, Eliano sought in another place to excuse the Maronites by explaining that these abuses and errors infiltrated their books and manuscripts through the effect of time and copyists and to their continued proximity to infidels and heretics. Cheikho quotes Eliano as saying "however if you ask them about their faith, they answer that their faith is that of Rome." (Cheikho 1923: 29).
The Maronites of today accept without any complication this reasoning, because they consider that the will of unity with Rome overcomes any ritual or even doctrinal differences. Since the Council of Chalcedon in 451 – that is, since the Maronite appearance in history as a community and until the time of the Crusaders and the Mamluks, with all the injustice and cruelty of the latter, Maronite relations with the West have never been broken. Even under the Ottoman Empire, their relations were consolidated, confirmed and fortified.
The Lebanese in general and the Maronites in particular enjoyed the care of the Apostolic See and the protection of Western Christian countries, which reduced the influence of the Ottoman Empire and elevated the morale of the Lebanese and their governors. Emir Fakhreddin had become a danger to the Empire because of his Western friendships, notably with the Popes of Rome, the Princes of Tuscany and Venice and the kings of France, which friendship was due partly to the Maronites.
It is noteworthy to name some of the great achievements, which because of these interactions between Rome, the West and the East, changed the face of our history. First and above all was the exchange of delegations; and second, the spiritual and cultural missions which established a bridge between East and West, with Lebanon as its cradle. These two factors aided our passage from the Middle Ages to a modern and contemporary age – from decadence to prosperity and from an era of hand copying and a scarcity and monopoly of others over books and science, to that of publishing and the dissemination of books and knowledge. This occurred with the installation of a printing press at the Monastery of Saint Anthony of Qozhaya, which was brought to Lebanon toward the end of the XVI century, 212 years before Napoleon brought his to Egypt in 1798.
This passage from an era of ignorance and improvisation to that of serious and planned science, was founded on the critique of texts and on a profound knowledge of languages, which enabled the translation of writings from different civilizations, such as Syriac, Hebrew, Latin and Greek. The alumni of the Maronite College of Rome, created in 1584, radiated their presence in both the East and the West. Some even directly contributed to the progress of science in the West; others greatly influenced the renaissance of the East by creating schools, building churches and monasteries, teaching languages and collecting manuscripts for printing and distribution. This two-way current, going from East to West and from West to East, has confirmed the ties, reduced distances and mingled cultures and civilizations.
In short, these relations have opened doors for the West -- in the progress of its civilization, sciences and technology, in the development and enrichment of its languages and literatures. Mutually, it permitted the East to awaken and to engage itself in the scientific and technological renaissance. Without doubt, the alumni of the Maronite College of Rome played a significant role in the renewal of the Maronite Nation, in the awakening of the East and in the consolidation of ties between the Eastern Churches and Rome.
Doctrine and Rites
This title merits a fully detailed study. Eliano himself who, in his document presented no more than a very succinct outline on the subject, devoted three separate notebooks to it. These notebooks were published by the Discalced Carmelite Diego Sanchyez d'Avilla, better known under his religious name Thomas of Jesus (1568-1626), in his work De Propaganda Salute Omnium Gentium, published in Anvers in 1613. (Feghali 1962: 50)
However, it is necessary to note that the Patriarch Michel Rizzi (1581-1597), as soon as he knew about the private notebooks that Eliano had presented to the Pope, refuted them and insisted that the same Pope send a second delegation. His wish was granted in 1596 with the dispatching of Father Jérôme Dandini.
In his report written in 1596, Dandini enumerated the reasons why the Patriarch refuted Eliano's claims. He stated that "the Patriarch began by criticizing the Council (gathered by Eliano in 1580), where the envoys of the Pope requested from the Maronite Patriarch and bishops a blank sealed paper [blanc-seing], which they promised to fill with all the good and useful things about the nation. Confident that this promise would be kept, all the bishops hastened to comply by appending their signatures to the paper. But after leaving the country and returning to Tripoli, the delegates utilized the signed but blank sealed paper to inscribe a number of errors and grave heresies. Without talking to any of the bishops and without leaving them a copy, the two envoys returned to Rome and slandered the Maronites before the Pope and the Cardinals, by attributing to them errors they never committed. I was astonished at first, [continued Dandini] and I suspected the truth. Since this account has been confirmed, in all sincerity and innocence, by a Reverend Patriarch and also supported by his assistants, I dare not doubt it." (Dandini 1656: 58)
In any case, this abuse of confidence and these remarks merit a separate study. However, in reading it carefully, we can say that the majority of the claims made were of a ritual nature and prove how jealous the Maronites were of their Eastern traditions. (Feghali 1962: 50-71)
From reading the two documents, and from referring to the study of Dr. Kamal S. Salibi about this period, we can conclude that the Maronites always aimed at realizing two objectives: to escape the dhimmi status in the Islamic world and to establish autonomy inside their country and enjoy free and reciprocal cooperation with their neighbors and allies, whether inside or outside their country.
The Maronites, in fact, succeeded at achieving these two objectives, especially with the two princedoms -- the 'Assafs and the Maanis. With the 'Assafs, they concluded their first alliance, which consisted of two Lebanese communities -- Christian and Muslim – participating in one power. This was realized thanks to including under one local unique authority, that of Emir Mansour 'Assaf Al-Turkomani and, for the first time, the Maronite, Sunni and Shiite regions. With the defeat of the 'Assafs, the Maronites concluded a second alliance with the Druze Maanis in the person of Emir Fakhreddin. Aided by the Maronites, Fakhreddin was able to overcome his adversaries in the war that lasted from 1584 to 1591.
A. The First Alliance: Christian-Muslim
Emir Mansour Al-'Assaf
Eliano wrote in his report: "The Maronite people are today under the rule of the Turks (Sultan Mourad II, 1574-1595) but not in an direct way; they are governed by a lord from the Arab Princes, one of those remaining from the Mamluk era, his name is Mansour. The Turkish State has entrusted him with all the Maronite villages [from which] to collect taxes imposed by the Sultan." (Anaissi 1921: 57)
Mansour was Prince Mansour 'Assaf Al-Turkomani, to whom the Turks entrusted the administration of the regions of Kesrouan and Jbeil to 'Akkar in the north and to Hama in Syria in the east. He governed from 1523 to 1580. The 'Assafs were not descendants of the Mamluks, as incorrectly affirmed by Eliano. They were Turkomans who were brought to Lebanon by the Mamluks to guard the coasts and to prevent contact between the Maronites and the Crusaders. They were successful in imposing their traditional leadership in the country. When the Ottoman conquest was established, Sultan Selim I accorded them the privileges of first-class citizens.
The 'Assafs reduced their own tariffs which were added to the taxes they collected for the Sublime Porte. This allowed the Maronite regions that were under their authority to prosper. Kesrouan became the most prosperous region, which led the Maronites to leave the north to settle in Kesrouan. The 'Assafs encouraged the implantation of the Maronites in their regions, because the Maronites were loyal, humble peasants who worked for the development of the country without creating problems for the regime. This was the reason the 'Assafs abandoned the Shiites and surrounded themselves with Maronite assistants and managers. (Salibi 1973: 23)
Sheikh Youssef Hobaïch
Eliano wrote: "To this Arab lord was associated a Maronite Prince named Youssef, who served him as his majordomo and principal advisor and was, to a certain extent, the protector of his people. Also, he wanted to have his share in the taxes and the imposts. To this end, all the people, including the Patriarch and the bishops, were placed under extortion and duty of the two." (Kuri 1989: 180-187; Anaissi 1921: 56-61)
Eliano continued by saying that he personally witnessed that portion of the funds sent by His Holiness the Pope to the Patriarch as alms being carried off by someone, the-above mentioned Youssef. (Kuri 1989: 180-187; Anaissi 1921: 56-61)
This Youssef in question was Youssef Hobaïch, a Maronite from Yanouh, in the District of Mnaïtra. He had already been installed since the Ottoman occupation as a local chief of the Assaf government in Ghazir. His sons and nephews also put themselves under the service of the Emirs, and Prince Mansour resorted to them in liquidating his enemies and his opponents.
This is how the Hobaïch [family] became one of the most powerful families in the region. Thanks to the Hobaïch family, the 'Assafs secured very strong relations with the Maronites. Aided by the Hobaïch, Emir Mansour succeeded in dominating the region entrusted to his governance. His power extended to the region of Tripoli, except its city [the town of Tripoli] and the city of Beirut. On their part, the Maronites saw the Emir as their friend and protector. This was when the Maronites recognized the leadership of the Hobaïch, because they practiced a new genre of government, which was not religious and priestly like that of the Patriarch, nor narrow and local like that of the Moqaddams. There was no emulation or competition between them and the Patriarch, but rather a complementarity [a complementary relationship] : they were proud of their church and jealous in protecting its rights and interests. They protected it [the Church] against injustices of the governments of Tripoli and supported it against the Moqaddams of Bsharri, who did not cease bothering it. Their influence with the Maronites was due to their closeness to the government of the 'Assafs and to their devotion in the service of the Church and the community.
"This mutual confidence between the 'Assafs and the Hobaïch on the powers that they had in their regions permitted the Hobaïch to become great experts in the affairs of the country, both foreign and domestic affairs. They created and developed close ties with other powers and representatives from all the regions relevant to the authority of the 'Assafs, as well as with leaders of neighboring regions. They put all their expertise and potential in the service of the Church and their co-religionists with no other consideration." (Salibi 1973: 25)
The Reasons for the Success of the First Christian-Islamic Pact
The explanation of this obscure point in history is due to the diligence of Dr. Kamal Salibi, who attributed the success of the concluded pact between the Maronite Christians and the Muslim 'Assafs to the 'Assafs conception of power and its agreement with the aspirations of the Maronites.
Salibi states that the Assafs government style did not resemble that which the Maronites had known under the governors of Tripoli and, after them, the Walis (Governors) and their representatives of the Ottoman authorities who governed according to the Islamic Law, which in turn was based on the interests of Islam and the Muslims. However, the "Assafs, who were Sunni Muslims, governed according to feudal usage, customs and local traditions, which were very different from Islamic Law. Their interests as Emirs were regional and had nothing in common with religious fanaticism. This permitted the Maronites to become an effective factor in the 'Assaf Emirate. This is when the interests of the Maronites converged with those of the 'Assafs, which have through time favored the creation of solid ties and a shared vision between the two parties. This fact pleased neither the Muslims nor the Ottoman representatives in Tripoli and Damascus. They suspected the 'Assafs and tried to create competitors for them in the region, even in Tripoli. Their choice landed on Youssef Saïfa Al-Turkomani, the great leader of 'Akkar, who they relied on and backed. (Salibi 1973: 25)
Even before Emir Fakhreddin took over power and unified the Druze Emirate in the Shouf, the 'Assafs were defeated and exterminated to the last descendant with the death on the Batroun road of Emir Mohammed, son of Emir Mansour. Their allies from the Hobaïch family were dispersed and those not killed fled to the Druze regions.
B. The Second Christian-Druze Pact: The Maronites and the Emir Fakhreddin
In his report Eliano wrote: "Due to the tariffs and to escape forced labor, many of them [the Maronites] left their own villages and settled among certain neighboring people called the Druze, who were men of war, belligerent and enemies of the Turks, however allied with the Arab Lord [Emir Mansour 'Assaf]. These Druze are known for their secret religion, but if we believe the Maronites, those who live among them [the Druze] end up taking quite a bit of their natural goodness…. Among the villages inhabited by these people there are five or six in which a group of the inhabitants are baptized Christians and who partake of all the sacraments and pay all rights to the Patriarch on one hand and on the other hand, like the Muslims, wear the white turban, go to their mosques, and if they are discovered, profess that they are Muslims." (Anaissi 1921: 58)
This small paragraph in Eliano's report, written without doubt in 1579, is but a reflection of the significant exodus of the Maronites toward the southern region, which began after the dispersion of the Shiites by the Mamluk in 1305 and was consolidated by the accession of the Maans, especially Emir Qorqomaz in 1544 and his son Fakhreddin II Senior in 1584.
As soon as Fakhreddin annexed the Gharb, the Metn and the Jurd districts, in addition to the Shouf, the exodus of the Maronites intensified, encouraged by the Emir in order to reinforce his partisans. He therefore profited from the presence, courage and openness of the Maronites toward all his economic, political and social plans to realize his great project -- independence from the Ottoman Empire.
A profound understanding and total allegiance was born and developed between the Maronites and Emir Fakhreddin, based on common interests and reciprocal respect. Kamal Salibi describes this relationship as follows: "The allegiance of the Maronites and Emir Fakhreddin and the care which he gave them were based on the most sure of all foundations and the most durable of all forms of union and allegiance -- common interest." (Salibi 1973: 26-27)
With Emir Fakhreddin, as with the 'Assafs, the Maronites tried again to contribute to the foundation of a country which could guarantee them, as to all its citizens, dignity and freedom. With Emir Fakhreddin, thanks to their sacrifices and their tenacious perseverance, they succeeded in sealing the triangle of interests between the West, the Lebanese Emirate and the Maronite Nation -- a triangle whose efficacy gave birth to modern Lebanon.
Since Fakhreddin and to this moment in history, the Maronites multiply their efforts and endeavors, anxious to build the country which can guarantee all its citizens full freedom and openness to new and modern human horizons.
In his appeal addressed to the Christians of Lebanon, testifying to a great respect for differences and soliciting them to surmount all forms of hatred, Pope John Paul II reminded them that the Maronites, loyal to their profound nature, will always forgive in order to build a Lebanon equal to the level of its spirituality, humanity and mission.

2020.10.31 14:17 how-queer She hunts on Halloween

I first met her on Halloween. That's when she hunts.
There’s a dark, secluded road on the south edge of the city. Black River Parkway, according to the maps, but there are no street signs. It winds for several miles through the middle of Black River Park. It’s ostensibly a city park, but you won’t find any gazebos or soccer fields or walking paths. Just miles upon miles of untamed nature, tucked away between the city limits and the suburbs beyond.
Black River feels more like it belongs in the deep country. The road is lined on one side by a limestone cliff face and the other by dense forest, a winding river tucked a ways back in the trees. Branches arc over the roadway and form a tunnel. You’d expect the drive to be pretty on bright Fall days - the sun filtering through a canopy of orange, red, and yellow - but light has a hard time penetrating that gnarled tangle of limbs and leaves. Night is worse; regular headlights only penetrate a few feet into that darkness, and turning on the brights only illuminates the next curve, no way of knowing what lurks in the pitch black around the bend.
I always hated that goddamned road.
My husband, John, and I lived a few miles away from the park. We were high school sweethearts. He was the captain of the football team, and I was the shy nerd who tutored him so he'd be able to keep playing. We grew up in a small town, and I never really had any friends until John took a liking to me. He used to call me his “pretty little brain.” Demeaning, I suppose, but as an affection-starved teenage girl I thought it was sweet. Everybody thought we had such a cute romance.
They didn’t see the bruises, of course.
It started after graduation. College wasn’t in the cards for us; whatever the townspeople might say, John wasn’t remarkable enough for a football scholarship, and neither of our families had the money to pay tuition. I might have scored an academic scholarship, but I was young and smitten, and I wasn’t going to go anywhere without John. We got married and found a little rent-to-own mobile home in a park near the city. I got my CNA certification and went to work in a nursing home. John found a job in construction. We got married a couple of months later.
It was nice at first, just the two of us building a life together. I thought we could be happy, even if we didn’t have much. John, however, wasn't so easily satisfied.
In our small town he was king, but in the city he was just another grunt doing manual labor. A few months after we got hitched, John lost his job at the construction site. He’d been getting into fights, they said. They had disrespected him, he told me. He jumped from job to job after that but eventually settled on drinking as his primary career path.
From the start, John blamed me for his lack of success. If he’d spent less time studying, he reckoned, and more time on the field, he could have made it to the big time. He’d remind me of this when he woke me up at 3 a.m. and dragged me to the kitchen to clean his spilled beer, or when he screamed at me for spending too much money on new scrubs for work, or when he shoved me into the bedroom, demanding I fulfill my “wifely duties.” It didn’t take long for the screaming and shoving to turn to hitting and kicking. He started taking all of my paychecks as soon as they came in, blowing what we didn’t need to live on booze and cigarettes.
I tried to leave, once. It was about a year in. I didn’t have any friends in the city, and John took all my money, so I hitchhiked back home to my parents. I showed up on their doorstep one day looking like a real cliche - black eye stark on my pale face, a ring of bruises on my upper arm, rain-soaked and shivering. They took me in, dried me off, and nursed my wounds.
Then they called John.
Ours was a God-fearing town, you see. We didn’t believe in divorce. A woman’s job was to submit to her husband.
“Natalie,” my mama said, pressing a frozen pack of peas to my eye socket. “You just need to try harder to make him happy.”
My daddy gave John a firm talking to when he got there, and we were sent on our way with a handshake and a hug.
I hate to say it, but I gave up that day, staring out the windshield while John fumed silently in the driver’s seat. There was a honeybee stuck in the windshield wiper, not quite dead, antennae and wings twitching in the buffeting wind. I watched its struggle get weaker and weaker, until eventually it stopped struggling at all.
It was after midnight when we got back to the city. When we were close to home, John turned the truck onto Black River Parkway.
“Where are we going?”
John tightened his grip on the steering wheel, knuckles white.
“John, baby, I’m sorry I left.”
He flicked on the brights, head swiveling, eyes searching the roadside. I squirmed in my seat. I tried to see anything out the windows - any indication of where he might be taking me - but it was all just darkness.
“John -”
He swerved to the opposite shoulder without warning, making a sharp U-turn. I braced myself on the dashboard as he skidded to a stop in a small, dirt pull-off. He unbuckled his seatbelt and turned to face me, lips curled in a snarl.
“Shut the fuck up, Nat.”
The beating he gave me was the least of it. With no neighbors to worry about, there was no need to hold back.
So he didn’t.
He apologized on the drive home, after. Begged me not to make him that angry again. I curled in on myself in the passenger seat, body one massive, aching bruise. I didn’t respond. It didn’t matter whether he was sorry or not, really.
I had nowhere else to go.
After that, Black River Parkway became his favorite place to dole out punishment. I changed my bus route to work just to avoid driving past it. It took me an hour longer to get there, but that was just two extra hours a day that John couldn’t lay hands on me.
I knew that someday, the cops were going to find my body on the side of that goddamned road.
Ten years ago, I thought it was that day. John had made some new drinking buddies, and we had gone to a Halloween party at his friend Al’s. I wore the sexy cheerleader costume he’d bought me and covered my black eye with concealer, determined to be the perfect date. I was all smiles and docile obedience, but it was no use: by the end of the night, John was shitfaced, and I was nothing to drunk John but a punching bag.
“Useless fuckin’ whore,” he seethed, swerving across the center line of the parkway. He reached over to smack me with a clumsy hand.
“John, watch the road,” I begged, dodging to avoid his knuckles. He was going to crash into a tree and kill us both before he even had the chance to kill me.
“Don’t tell me how t’ drive, bitch.” His hand almost connected with my nose but slapped across my cheek instead. I blinked back tears at the sting.
“John, please, I know you’re angry…”
“Angry? Angry?” John laughed, ugly and low. He looked over at me with a sneer. “Slut flirts wi’ my friends all night and wonders why I’m angry?
We swerved close enough to the cliff face that the passenger side mirror scraped across the rock, crumpling its plastic housing.
“John! Please," I sobbed, trying to shrink against the passenger door.
John pressed his foot down more firmly on the accelerator. His hand tangled in my hair, and he wound it around his fist, pulling me toward him across the armrest.
“Keep begging, won’ do no good.” His breath was hot against my ear. The scent of stale beer wafted to my nostrils, and I tried not to gag.
“John,” I whimpered, “I -”
A figure loomed ahead in the headlights. A tall woman in a white dress and a strange mask was standing in the center of the road just before the next curve.
My scream startled him enough to actually look.
He pulled the steering wheel hard to the left. We crashed into the treeline, branches cracking against the glass of the windshield. I barely had time to register the large trunk looming out of the darkness before we hit it with a sickening crunch.
Everything went black.
My senses came back to me slowly. Sharp pain lanced through my collarbone where the seat belt had caught it; my nose felt wrong, loose and crooked, and blood streamed from both nostrils, red saturating the nylon of the airbag. A repetitive chime sounded in time with the throbbing in my head. I groaned and blinked my eyes open.
The front of the truck was crumpled against the tree, the windshield twisted and crushed in its frame. I shook chunks of safety glass out of my hair and wiggled my fingers and toes. Nothing seemed broken. I looked over at the driver’s seat to check on John.
The seat was empty, and the door was hanging open.
“John,” I croaked. I got no response.
I stumbled out of the cab after struggling with the passenger door in its bent frame. I looked back in what I thought was the direction of the road, but I couldn't see anything but the dark silhouettes of tree trunks.
“John?” I called again, little more than a whisper in the oppressive silence. A breeze rustled the leaves overhead. Aside from the wind and the distant roar of the river, there were no sounds of any kind - no crickets or owls, nothing rustling in the bushes or in the branches above.
I circled the truck bed, fighting off waves of dizziness and nausea. Part of me wanted to just walk away, leave John for dead in the woods and make my way back to the parkway to check on the woman we'd almost hit, but the woods were dense. I was injured and alone, the night was pitch black, and I was starting to think John had already had the same idea about me.
I'm not an expert tracker or anything, but my daddy used to take me hunting when I was a girl. I studied the ground on John's side of the truck, looking for any clue to where he might have gone. The leaves and brush heading straight out from the driver's door had clearly been disturbed. It seemed as good a path as any to follow.
I leaned back into the cab to find my phone, and I pulled up short when I saw John's still sitting in the cup holder next to mine. He may have been a drunk and a bastard, but he wasn't an idiot; why the hell would he wander off into the woods - possibly injured - without his phone? I pocketed his and opened the flashlight on mine. As I started to exit the cab, something else caught my eye.
John's shotgun sat in its holster above the rear window. I hesitated for a second before deciding it was better to be safe than sorry. I grabbed the gun and a handful of shells from the box in the backseat.
Phone in one hand and gun propped on my shoulder, I set off to follow the path John had laid. Even with the flashlight, it was impossible to see more than a couple of feet. I kept my eyes focused on the ground so I wouldn't lose his trail.
John hadn't been trying to conceal his route, that was for sure. Small branches were snapped and hanging loose where he'd plowed through them. A blanket of flattened, wet leaves and packed dirt stretched ahead of me, almost as if he'd been dragging something behind him. I thought back to the woman on the road. Something settled heavily in my gut. John usually only took his anger out on me, but I shuddered at the thought that some innocent stranger had gotten caught up in our mess.
I tightened my grip on the shotgun and pressed on. That eerie silence followed me, but the sound of the river was getting louder. The trees were thinning out, but it didn't do much for the darkness. When I looked up, I could make out the sliver of the crescent moon high in the sky. I squinted at the stars, trying to get a sense of what direction I was heading.
A slimy, wet hand closed around my ankle.
I flailed backward, losing my grip on the phone, and kicked out wildly. My foot connected with a fleshy thud, and the figure on the ground let me go with a pained moan.
My phone had landed a few feet away, flashlight smothered by rotting leaves. I couldn't make out who had grabbed me, but they looked too bulky to be the slender woman I'd seen on the road. Trembling, I crept toward my phone, eyes trained on the shadow on the ground. They gurgled.
I lifted the light with shaking hands.
He let out another choked gurgle that might have been my name. He was laid out on the ground crawling on his belly, arm stretched toward me, fingers scrabbling weakly at the forest floor. Four deep gashes marred his handsome face, his lips mangled and shredded. The back of his jacket was slashed and splattered red, and he dragged his limp legs behind him, Levi's soaked through with blood.
Before I could say or do anything, melodic laughter rent the silence. John's eyes went wide, and he was yanked back into the darkness.
It might not have been my brightest moment, but instinct and adrenaline kicked in, and I was after him like a shot. I tossed my phone aside to grip the shotgun in both hands, barrel aimed forward into the dark. A high scream echoed through the woods around me, and my blood froze; it was a clear, cold cry of triumph.
I emerged from the trees on the bank of the river. The dim light of the crescent moon rippled on the water's surface. On the shore, the woman from the road towered over John's broken body.
Only she wasn't a woman at all.
Most of her looked human enough, though she stood well over six feet tall. Thick black hair tumbled over her shoulders in a wild tangle. Black antlers curved proudly skyward from the mass of curls, regal as a crown. Her face was obscured by a mask made from the skull of a buck. From a distance, her eyes were nothing but empty black pools.
Her white dress was almost sheer, the curve of her breasts visible through the fabric, and the hem fluttered about her thighs just above the knee. Dirt and blood stained the bottom few inches of the skirt. Toned muscles shifted under skin that shone ethereally in the moonlighting, so pale it was almost translucent.
Black veins emerged in tendrils from under the mask, snaking across her pale skin until they converged into thick, iridescent black scales on her forearms and calves. The scales covered her hands and feet, and her long, bony fingers were tipped with gleaming black talons several inches long and curved to a wicked point.
As I stood frozen at the treeline, she reached one arm up toward the sky, talons extended. With another inhuman shriek, she brought those claws straight down onto John's chest. I could hear the sucking squelch when they pierced his skin, the crack of his ribs giving way, and blood sprayed over her dress in a fine mist. John's limbs spasmed, but she twisted her wrist with a sickening crunch, and he went still.
I remained frozen, finger trembling on the shotgun's trigger, while the creature rooted around in John's chest. When her hand emerged, red and glistening, she was clutching his heart in her claws.
I think my mind meant to scream, but all I managed was a pitiful whimper. The creature's head shot up to look at me just the same.
She dropped John's heart back onto his chest, where it landed with a wet thud. Black eyes trained on mine, she stalked toward me, unhurried. She moved with leonine grace, long strides swiftly closing the gap between us, until her belly was pressed to the muzzle of my shotgun. I had to crane my neck back to keep looking at the bleached bone of her mask. Slowly, she brought a hand up to rest on top of the gun's barrel - gently, not pushing - and I watched her claws retract to a less lethal length. My finger slid off the trigger, and I let the gun drop to my side.
She crouched down to meet my gaze, head tilted to one side. Shining black eyes studied me from behind the mask, an endless void, and the longer I stared, I swore I could see galaxies swirling in their depths. She raised a hand and lightly brushed the rough pads of her scaled fingers across my temple, down the bridge of my nose, across my collarbone. The pain from my injuries faded to a dull ache.
I was bone tired all of a sudden, and I felt my knees start to give way. The creature caught me under my arms and guided me down to the forest floor, settled on a blanket of leaves and dirt with my head nestled in her bloodstained lap. She ran her fingers through my hair, careful not to scratch me with her nails, and started to hum a melody I didn't recognize, haunting and deep. Staring up at the stars in her eyes, I drifted out of consciousness.
I dreamt of a cottage by the river. I was dancing in the backyard around a roaring fire near the shore, hands clasped with a beautiful woman with long, dark hair and eyes as black as night. She smiled at me, and I smiled back.
I was awakened by a racket of sirens and shouting voices. My head felt like it was stuffed full of cotton, and I struggled at first against the hands curled around my upper arms. When the fog lifted, I found myself strapped to a gurney staring up into the faces of two worried paramedics. One of them slid a needle into my arm, and the world went blissfully dark.
The cops came to talk to me at the hospital later that day and helped fill in the gaps. A driver on Black River Parkway spotted my bloodied body slumped on the side of the road and assumed the worst. They were shocked when I turned out to be alive - a miracle, they said - and rushed me into an ambulance. It didn't take them long to find the crashed truck a few hundred feet into the trees.
Thankfully, nobody asked too many questions. They pieced together a narrative that made sense and stuck with it: John was driving drunk and nearly got us killed, and he got lost in the woods when he went looking for help. Happens all the time, they assured me. I was lucky I went the opposite direction and found the road. After a few days, their search for John turned to a search for a corpse, and after a few weeks they stopped searching altogether.
It seemed easier to go along with their story than try to convince them of the truth. Figured they would think I was talking nonsense, or else I hit my head too hard and had one hell of a fever dream.
I reckon that's what you all think too.
Whatever you want to believe, that night changed me. I got my shit together and thought for the first time about what I wanted to do with my life. Without John taking all my money to fuel his vices, I was able to save up a nice little nest egg. Without John, turned out, I was able to do a lot of things. I went back to school and got my nursing degree and landed a well-paying job. It took a few years of hard work and frugal living, but when all was said and done I sold the mobile home and got myself a two-bedroom cottage near Black River. I've never remarried, but that's alright.
Every year I have a date on Halloween.
There's no shortage of men like John in this world: self-proclaimed alpha males who find themselves at the bottom of the pack when they step out of their mama's den. Their impotent rage feeds into a bottomless well of cruelty, and they vomit it out through their fists on those they perceive as beneath them.
I know those men see me as an easy target: a scared little rabbit to their big bad wolf. I've got big doe eyes and soft brown curls framing a baby face that looks a good deal younger than my 35 years. All I have to do is bat my eyelashes at them, and they go on the prowl.
This year's wolf is Gary. He's married to my coworker, Jill. I normally wouldn't pick a guy so close to home, but I took one look at the black and blue fingerprints ringing sweet, timid Jill's neck, and I knew he was the one.
It didn't take much to hook him. I went out for a smoke break while he was waiting for Jill to finish up her shift, making sure my scrubs were just a little tighter than usual. He leered at me, and I offered up a shy smile and a pretty pink blush in return. He rolled up to the curb and asked for my number.
Gary is picking me up this evening. I got my costume all laid out, same as every year: a sweet little deer, complete with pointed ears and a white fluffy tail. He'll follow that tail through the dark of the woods without sniffing a hint of danger in the air, just like all the others before him.
There's a party out in Black River Park, I've told Gary, where we can do whatever we want, secluded from prying eyes. I know the way, I've promised, and I'm happy to lead him there. He'll try to paw at me on the trail, eager to taste his prize. But I'm quicker than a wolf, and I won't be caught in his claws. I've got places to be.
At the end of the path, by a river bathed in moonlight, my date waits for me. I think she'll like my gift this year. She always does. I meet her every year on Halloween.
That's when we hunt.

Intel Funded Study : OSA Continuum (Optical Society of America)- Breaking the field-of-view limit in augmented reality with a scanning waveguide display ) - Sony MP-CL1 Pico Projector display (Microvision) - 80 degree FOV
In this post, there are two studies on AVR display. The bottom one explains with detail if anyone interested in understanding the different displays. It's very long but worth it.
It's LBS for now for AR glass per my understanding after reading most of this articles. There is no second thought. Good luck everyone. This really boosted my confidence yet again.

4.3. Display system : The imaging source of the scanning waveguide system is a LBS pico-projector (Sony MP-CL1) with resolution of 1920 by 720. The wavelength of the red color is 639 nm. In experiment, another notch filter (Thorlabs FL635-10) was placed at the projector output to filter out the green and blue lights. The thickness of the glass waveguide is 1 mm. The chiral lens array has a size of 8 by 15, lens pitch of 2 mm and focal length of 1.5 mm at the recorded wavelength (457 nm) and 1.15 mm for display wavelength (639 nm). The collimation lens has a focal length of 20 mm. The propagating angle of the laser rays in waveguide was adjusted to be 45° to match the waveguide thickness and lens pitch. The camera for taking the picture is Sony Alpha a7II with camera lens Sony SEL16F28.

This one is very nice study as well. This elaborates the issues revolving around OLED & LED and emphasize that LBS most probably has the best solution.
In comparison with projection, emissive displays are less mature but have potential to reduce the form factor. They exhibit intrinsically high dynamic range because of the true black state. Micro organic light-emitting diode (μOLED) is a promising candidate for emissive microdisplays. The typical architecture is patterned color filters on top of white OLEDs. To date, full-color μOLED displays with 3,000 to 5,000 nits in luminance and ~3,000 ppi (pixel per inch) in resolution have been achieved (Haas, 2018; Motoyama et al., 2019). However, for AR displays with a large eye-box, such brightness is still inadequate (Lee et al., 2019b). Future development should pay attention to boosting their brightness, device lifetime, and current efficiency. On the other hand, micro light-emitting diode (μLED) is emerging and has the potential to become the next-generation display technology. The most recent development of 10-μm pitch (~1,300 ppi) full-color LED microdisplay has achieved 105 to 106 nits in luminance (Quesnel et al., 2020). Despite this impressive progress, μLED still faces two major challenges. The first is to enhance the non-radiative recombination when the area ratio of the side wall increases (Gou et al., 2019). This means, for small μLED chips down to <5 μm, the external quantum efficiency would drop dramatically. The second issue is how to realize full color and high resolution simultaneously, as mass transfer and assembly for such tiny RGB LEDs is challenging (Lin and Jiang, 2020; Wong et al., 2020). A parallel approach is to use blue μLED to pump green and red quantum dots as color conversion (Huang et al., 2020). However, obtaining a uniform, long lifetime color conversion layer without color cross talk for such small pixel sizes is by no means easy. Therefore, further effort is needed to develop mass transfer technique or color conversion layer patterning technique for ultra-small pixel pitch (<5 μm) μLEDs.
As for scanning display systems, they are normally with high efficiency, small form factor, high dynamic range, and high brightness using laser illumination. Typically, a 2D micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) mirror or two 1D MEMS mirrors are applied to scan the laser beam in orthogonal directions to form 2D images. Different from the panel-based displays, scanning displays do not have an object plane. This unique property indicates that whereas panel-based displays form object images on the panel, the scanning displays can directly form images on the retina. One prominent example is the LBS system in North Focals (Alexander et al., 2018). As most scanning display engines have intrinsically small exit pupil, they need a proper exit pupil expansion/steering, and thus the optical design will be more sophisticated. When compared with reflective and emissive displays, the image uniformity of the scanning method is another inevitable issue that requires improvement.
The freeform half mirrors, freeform prisms, and birdbath combiners usually manifest decent imaging quality and high optical efficiency, but mainly suffer from a large form factor. To reduce the form factor, cascaded mirrors embedded in a lightguide has been invented. However, for lightguide combiners, additional attention should be paid on see-through transmittance, see-through uniformity, stray light control, and image brightness uniformity. As a result, the image quality and optical efficiency are usually compromised. The diffractive combiners are also introduced to reduce the form factor of traditional reflective combiners. Different from the reflective counterpart, the chromatic nature of diffractive elements needs to be considered in optical design. Off-axis HOEs combined with an LBS system can provide a true glasses-like form factor yet a limited eye-box. To further enlarge the eye-box, grating-coupled lightguide combiners are employed where the output coupler design is more complicated as it can also perform as the exit pupil expander.
Currently, two types of gratings are employed in lightguide AR: holographic volume Bragg gratings (VBGs) and surface relief gratings (SRGs). Due to the different refractive index contrast, they exhibit different spectral and angular responses. The traditional VBGs with a small refractive index contrast (δn ≤ 0.05) manifest narrow spectral (~10 nm) and angular (~5° in air) bandwidths, whereas SRGs with a large δn (≥0.5) show much broader spectral and angular bands (Lee et al., 2019b). Interestingly, DigiLens has developed a large δn VBG (close to LC birefringence) based on holographic polymer-dispersed LC, which is switchable and performs much better than traditional VBGs (Brown et al., 2018). Beside these two gratings, polarization volume gratings (PVGs) based on chiral LCs are also emerging (Yin et al., 2019). The refractive index contrast is essentially the birefringence of the LC material and thus can be tuned within a broad range (from <0.1 to >0.4). As those grating couplers are usually optimized for a particular polarization (e.g., a linear polarization for VBGs and SRGs and a circular polarization for PVGs), a PCS modulating the polarization of light from the display engine and polarization management within the lightguide will be significant for improving the system efficiency. Another unavoidable aspect of improving light efficiency is the 2D exit pupil expander design. Typically, a turn-around gradient-efficiency grating (also termed as fold grating) is performed to first expand the eye-box in one direction within the lightguide. Then the output grating extends the eye-box in another direction. Specifically, due to the inherent chromatic dispersion in diffraction, color uniformity control is as challenging as brightness uniformity in most of the waveguide designs using diffractive combiners. However, because there is a trade-off between optical efficiency of the gratings (both the turn-around grating and the output grating) and colobrightness uniformity within the expanded eye-box, finding an appropriate balance between them is essential from the system perspective.

We overviewed the major challenges and discussed potential opportunities of display optics in the fast-developing field of AR and VR systems. The requirements from the human visual system are analyzed in detail to offer quantitative standards for future near-eye display devices. These requirements also bring out the major issues that need to be emphasized and addressed in current devices, regarding panel resolution, form factor, imaging performance, VAC, FOV, and brightness. By learning from recent advances in optics and developing trends of AR and VR devices, we shared a few thoughts about how to meet these challenges in the near future and the long run.

In the north, Azeris launched an artillery strike then attacked, but retreated after leaving dozens of dead bodies.
The army has cleared two villages east of Qarin Tak from Azeri infiltrators. (not far from already-mentioned Avetaranots, which is 6km from Shushi).
Our reconnaissance units had located and destroyed a large ammo depot and a base belonging to infiltrators. It was so big that the fire was visible in the capital Stepanakert. As you know, there are thick forests between Hadrut and Shushi. The infiltrators are active in these areas.
The warfare in forests is different. It's not a positional battle. You find and neutralize infiltrator groups. They often run away after being discovered. Often our reconnaissance discovers their position and passes the coordinates to artillery to conduct strikes.
For several days, Azeris tried to move from Fizuli to Martuni (east) but failed. Now they try to avoid direct confrontation and chose to send infiltration groups instead. It could be done for multiple purposes: to provide PR for Ilham Aliyev, create panic, cut supply roads, etc.
Azerbaijan's breakthrough-groups (punching fists) aren't as effective anymore after the initial days but they still have attack power; we must remain vigilant. There were three of these punching fists, with each having 10,000-20,000 soldiers and hundreds of armored vehicles. These groups failed the blitzkrieg.
Then they waged a different type of war, the one about squeezing and taking advantage of the numerical superiority. However, this squeezing tactic is also wearing out under our artillery and other bombardments.
Today they use a tactic one rank lower. They were forced to choose infiltration warfare due to their heavy losses. There aren't even many vehicles anymore and they get destroyed easily.
Shushi is a strategically important city. Not just for morale but also because it controls the road to the capital Stepanakert. Many of the infiltrators who tried to reach Shushi have been destroyed, but obviously, they will try again.
Last night we ruined the infiltrators' plans to bring reinforcements and create a bigger base for a future assault against Shushi.
There is no effective method to destroy all the drones. Even Saudi Arabia, with the most expensive defenses, sustained heavy losses in its oil sector when the drones targeted it last year. Even Israel, which has the highest density of air defense, has difficulties. The same about the United States.
We did improve the quality of our air defense recently, which led to the destruction of some Bayraktars.
We are working on our loitering drone industry but it's far behind what Azeris purchase from Israel.
If Ilham Aliyev didn't think he could capture all of Artsakh on the 32nd day of the war, he would not have started this war. Without Turkish support, their quality would have been much worse.
The most important resource in this war isn't the dollar amount, but the power of will and the nerves. We defend our homeland and existence so we improve our [aforementioned] resources with each strike, while the Azeri public will soon begin wondering about the death toll and search for answers for other questions. ,

21:57: a video was published allegedly showing Azerbaijan using an illegal white phosphorus bomb to burn down the forests. Forest fires are seen. [update: white phosphorus is illegal if used against humans but it can be used to burn enemy facilities]
22:00 army spokesman Artsrun's briefing: early in the morning Azeris attacked in several directions. In the north, after a short artillery fire, their infantry attacked several positions but was massacred and thrown back, after leaving behind many bodies.
Battles continued near several heights in the south, north of Araks river basin. We made positional improvements but the battles continue and I can't give details.
In the center, intense battles took place near the Martuni-Chartar area. Azeris used mainly artillery and attack units (not many vehicles) to try to make a breakthrough but failed. No positional changes. Intense battles continue.
In the center-eastern area near Avetaranots village forests [6km of Shushi], several infiltrator groups and a base was destroyed. We do have significant success here but the battles against other infiltrator groups continue; they try to infiltrate from other areas.
You saw the video of a captured terrorist [Syrian militant] today. He gave details about who trained them [Turkey], how they got there, etc. These militants are being used as cannon fodder. They are used as livestock to clear the land mines. That's their fate; I want the whole world to know this.
The war isn't as fierce anymore but in specific localized battles it can be very heavy, with the use of artillery, etc. but not many vehicles.
Q: any comments on an incident in Davit Bek [settlement right at the border with the Republic of Armenia and southern Artsakh].
A: I don't have a casualty report but Azeri artillery hit this direction and caused some damage.
Q: is it true that Azeris used a phosphorus bomb?
A: we're still examining the reports of the use. Overall, the war crimes and illegal weapons used by Azerbaijan against civilians is a recorded fact, which the international community should be aware of. The Armenian population was attacked. Armenians have the right to destroy legitimate targets deep within Azerbaijan from which the aggression comes from.
Large Azeri cities have various military objects within them, including the airports used by Azeri and Turkish military aviation. Artsakh has the right to target such objects.
If Artsakh's older Soviet-made missiles miss the target and land elsewhere, there is no excuse for Azerbaijan's state-of-the-art precision missiles to target Artsakh settlements without military objects. They didn't strike Shushi church or the hospital "accidentally".
22:03: Trump's security adviser Robert O'Brian has directly accused Azerbaijan of being the one that hesitates to agree to an unconditional ceasefire.
He said work is being done to place Scandinavian peacekeepers in the region.
Neither the U.S. nor Armenia will accept Turkish peacekeepers or the meddling in the conflict zone. [isn't this kinda yuge?]
22:49: painter Nikola Aghababyan (Gelndale) has auctioned some of his pieces and donated the $33,000 revenue to

2020.10.26 22:05 lawstakovich PSA: Alabama is the Easiest State in which to get Married

Hello, friends! So I am typing this out as a resource for a friend of mine, and thought I would share here because I have seen a lot of people asking about ways to get married easily, and I've known several other military couples who have gotten married in Alabama because they needed to do it easily during a pandemic.
I present to you: Getting Married in Alabama. It is literally the easiest state to get married in. You don't even have to physically go to Alabama.
Basically, you fill out this form, get it notarized, and either take the form in person or you mail it in to a probate court in a county of your choosing. Cost varies by county. If you mail it in (or go in person), you have 30 days from when you get the form notarized to file it. Your date of marriage will be the date of the notarization. You can request certified copies (again, cost varies by county) whether you go in person or mail it in. (If you mail it in, make sure to also send a stamped envelope for them to return your copies. Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about this process.
Choose your county based on cost, cool name, location, whatever! Do note that some counties do not allow you to do this via mail. Some good suggestions for cost include:
  1. Baldwin County, where it costs $73 (including a certified copy)
  2. Limestone County, where it costs $70 plus $3 per certified copy
  3. Marshall County, where it costs $73. (Note, they are only accepting the form via mail right now because of Covid)
  4. Mobile County, where it costs $70 plus $3 per certified copy
Hope this helps someone!

2020.10.26 21:45 NotABotaboutIt Hurricane Zeta

Zeta is currently strengthening as a Category 2 Hurricane before it makes landfall in the US.

A note on the name: When we go past 21 named hurricanes in a season, we switch to the Greek alphabet. It is 21 because in the English alphabet name list we do not use Q, U, X, Y and Z. This has only happened once before, in 2005. Here's the Greek alphabet, for reference: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, Epsilon, Zeta, Eta, Theta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, Mu, Nu, Xi, Omicron Persei 8 , Pi, Rho, Sigma, Tau, Upsilon, Phi, Chi, Psi, Omega. You can learn more about hurricane names here.
Please look to local news, local weather, and local and state emergency management agencies to find out more about how you may be affected, if you need to evacuate, and steps on getting prepared. Please everyone stay safe.
